SUMMARY:Nashua - Suitcase Stories
DESCRIPTION:Suitcase Stories® is a signature program of the International Institute of New England. It raises the profile of refugees and immigrants while strengthening community through the art of storytelling. \nLaunched in 2016\, Suitcase Stories began as a traveling live performance series featuring foreign and U.S.-born residents sharing powerful refugee and immigrant stories. Since its initial year\, the initiative has expanded to include programming customized for community partners. To date\, more than 3\,000 people have enjoyed a mainstage performance and thousands more have watched a taped episode on PBS television. The response from those audience members spoke of how the performance challenged and expanded their perceptions of refugees and immigrants.

Reserve your tickets today! \nAbout Anote’s Ark \nWhat happens when your nation is swallowed by the sea? With the harsh realities of climate change looming\, the low-lying Pacific nation Kiribati must find a new solution for the survival of its people. With sweeping cinematography\, Anote’s Ark interweaves two poignant stories. Anote Tong\, endearing president of the island\, races to find options-advocating in international climate negotiations and even investigating building underwater cities. At the same time\, warm and sharp-witted Sermery\, a young mother of six\, tackles every struggle with humour. She must decide whether to leave the only culture she knows on the island and migrate to a new life in New Zealand. Anote’s Ark captures the next evolution in the shifting dynamics of climate change-one where borders\, technology\, and global treaties are urgent and can change daily life as we know it. This portrait of the Kiribati people exudes strength of character and grace as they confront the inevitable change they are facing head-on.

SUMMARY:New London - Immigration 101
DESCRIPTION:The immigration crisis is a significant concern for all of us\, regardless of your political preference. SUMMARY:Concord - Home Now: How 6000 Refugees Transformed an American Town
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 1st\, 2019\, 6 p.m. at Gibson’s Bookstore\, 45 South Main Street\, Concord\, NH. \nFree and open to the public. \nCynthia Anderson shares a moving chronicle of struggle\, transformation\, and who belongs in America. Her new book Home Now: How 6000 Refugees Transformed an American Town\, tells the impactful story of Lewiston\, Maine. \nThe once-thriving city of Lewiston had fallen on hard times–mills closed\, jobs gone. It was mostly white\, and the young were leaving. Then thousands of African Muslim immigrants came to town. \nOver the past 15 years\, Lewiston\, Maine has improbably become one of the most Muslim towns in America. About 6\,000 of the city’s 36\,000 inhabitants are African refugees and asylum seekers\, many of them Somali. Cynthia Anderson tells the story of this fractious yet resilient mill town near where she grew up\, offering the unfolding drama of a community’s reinvention–and humanizing some of the defining political issues in America today. \nIn Lewiston\, progress is real but precarious. With empathy and honesty Anderson takes the reader deep into the lives of both immigrants and lifelong Mainers: a single Muslim mom\, an anti-Islamist activist\, a Congolese asylum seeker\, a Somali community leader. Their lives unfold in these pages as anti-immigrant sentiment rises across the US and national realities collide with those in Lewiston. Home Now gives a poignant account of America’s evolving relationship with religion and race\, and provides a sensitive refutation of the idea that we’d be better off without change. \nView flyer: Home Now at Gibson’s Bookstore

Rosi spent months living on the Mediterranean island\, capturing its history\, culture and the current everyday reality of its 6\,000-strong local population as hundreds of migrants land on its shores on a weekly basis. The resulting documentary focuses on 12-year-old Samuele\, a local boy who loves to hunt with his slingshot and spend time on land even though he hails from a culture steeped in the sea.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Advancing Equity: A Racial Equity Journey
DESCRIPTION:Discrimination based on race and ethnicity can negatively affect health across lifetimes and generations. Racial inequities are not random. They have been created and sustained over time by unfair and discriminatory policies and practices at many levels. Inequities will not disappear on their own\, but communities have the power to disrupt them.\n\nJoin us on November 12\, 2019 as we team up with the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) to share how the Spokane Regional Health District began their journey toward disrupting racial inequities in Spokane\, WA. We’ll explore how the Health District got started\, some lessons learned along the way\, and what they hope to achieve. We’ll also share the framework they’re using to build their internal capacity and discuss how you can use it to embed racial equity considerations in your community’s practices.GARE is a national network of government jurisdictions working to achieve racial equity and advance opportunities for all. It is a joint project of the new Race Forward and the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society. \n\n\n\n\n\nNov 12\, 2019 2 PM Central Time (3 PM Eastern) \n\nRegister Here
