SUMMARY:Digital Equity Planning in NH with the National Collaborative for Digital Equity.
DESCRIPTION:There are efforts in motion to improve Digital Equality in New Hampshire and we need to be sure the right people are at the table! Join us to learn about the grants and how we can affect the work to make sure it is what it needs to be in NH. Join us to learn about what is happening and what will happen in NH and how to influence the outcome. \nWEDNESDAY\, JUNE 14\, 2023 AT 9 AM – 11 AM\, VIA ZOOM \nThe National Collaborative for Digital Equity’s (NCDE) aim is to support sustained efforts to eliminate the digital divide as a barrier to economic and educational opportunity. As a federally tax-exempt nonprofit\, NCDE provides free dissemination and policy education as well as comprehensive\, fee-based consulting services\, in support of digital equity for economic and educational inclusion. \nTheir commitment is to “field building” — generating a sustained national infrastructure to support evidence-based practices in eliminating the digital divide as the crushing barrier it presents to the nation’s low- and moderate-income earners and communities. \nThe Department of Commerce’s use of Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal Funding to help Close the digital divide specifically\, $2.75 billion to fund Digital Equity. We know that digital exclusion carries a high societal and economic cost; reduces economic opportunity\, educational achievement\, positive health outcomes\, social inclusion\, and civic engagement; and exacerbates existing wealth and income gaps. The Digital Equity Act\, which was included as a part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal provides NTIA with funding for three grant programs to promote digital inclusion and equity for communities that lack the skills\, technologies and support needed to take advantage of broadband connections. NTIA will provide states with digital equity planning grants. NTIA will also implement a formula-based state grant program and a competitive grant program with funds available to accelerate the adoption of broadband through digital literacy training\, workforce development\, devices access programs\, and other digital inclusion measures. \nQuestions: WelcomingNH@miracoalition.org \nRegister here: https://bit.ly/DigitalEquityPlanning

SUMMARY:Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth\, also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day\, holds a profound historical significance in the United States. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19\, 1865\, marking the end of one of the darkest chapters in American history. \nThe origins of Juneteenth can be traced back to the American Civil War\, which erupted in 1861 over the divisive issue of slavery. As the war progressed\, Union forces advanced\, gradually liberating enslaved individuals throughout the Southern states. However\, the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 was slow in Texas due to its geographical isolation and the resistance of slaveholders. \nIt was not until Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, on June 19\, 1865\, that the enslaved people in the state were informed of their freedom\, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This sparked jubilant celebrations among the newly freed individuals and laid the foundation for an annual observance that came to be known as Juneteenth. \nJuneteenth is more than a historical event; it holds immense significance in contemporary society. It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for freedom and equality\, highlighting the resilience and perseverance of African Americans throughout history. \nFirst and foremost\, Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom. It honors the legacy of those who fought tirelessly for emancipation and recognizes the indomitable spirit of African Americans in the face of oppression. Moreover\, Juneteenth serves as a time for reflection\, acknowledging the ongoing fight against systemic racism and discrimination that persists today. \nThis commemorative day also serves as a unifying force. Juneteenth brings communities together\, fostering a sense of belonging and collective remembrance. It encourages dialogue about the history of slavery and its lasting effects\, promoting a greater understanding of racial injustice. By acknowledging the past\, Juneteenth prompts critical conversations about the present and inspires action towards a more equitable future. \nJuneteenth provides a platform for education and cultural enrichment. Through various activities\, such as parades\, concerts\, and art exhibits\, it showcases African American heritage\, art\, and culture. This celebration helps to reclaim and amplify voices that have long been marginalized\, offering an opportunity to appreciate the contributions and resilience of the African American community. \nMoreover\, Juneteenth has gained increased recognition and prominence in recent years. In 2021\, it was officially declared a federal holiday in the United States\, signifying an important step towards acknowledging and honoring the history and contributions of African Americans. This recognition elevates Juneteenth to a national platform\, encouraging broader participation and fostering a deeper understanding of its historical context. \nJuneteenth stands as a momentous occasion that symbolizes the triumph of freedom over oppression. Its historical origins and contemporary significance highlight the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality. By embracing Juneteenth\, we honor the past\, educate the present\, and pave the way for a more inclusive future.

SUMMARY:Laconia Multicultural Festival
DESCRIPTION:Laconia Multicultural Festival Celebrating Diversity since 2001\n\nLaconia Multicultural Festival is a signature event in the Downtown. We celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Laconia and the Lakes Region: from our earliest days to recently arrived New Americans. The festival highlights the music\, arts\, crafts and cuisine in honor of this growing diversity. Authentic artists from cultures represented in our community perform in Rotary Park. In the last thirty years in particular\, immigrants and political refugees/New Americans arrived from almost every country in the world. (See list below) They are our friends and neighbors\, adding richness to our community.\n\nLaconia Human Relations Committee\nThe Festival was conceived and is supported by the the Laconia Human Relations Committee. The Laconia Human Relations Committee\, a Mayor’s Committee\, was created in 2000 by then Mayor Matthew Lahey and Police Chief Bill Baker. David Stamps is current LHRC Chair. The LHRC works to cultivate a welcoming community for all. We educate ourselves\, our children and the community at-large about\, as well as respond to\, prejudice that undermines the dignity of any person. Members have been instrumental in welcoming political refugees over the years and helping in the resettlement process. The Laconia Multicultural Festival is a committee of the LHRC. Mayor Andrew Hosmer and the LHRC committee welcome new members from the Laconia area. For information call Laconia City Hall (603.527.1270) or visit Laconia’s website.\n\nFestival Committee\nThe Laconia Multicultural Committee would like to say THANKS to all of our sponsors and contributors\, our vendors & social service agencies\, all the entertainers & performers\, and all of YOU who have continued to support this great event by attending each year. We are always looking for new members to join the organizing committee and volunteers to help on Festival day. If you are interested\, please contact us via Facebook or our website. Personally\, I would like to thank all the committee members for their selfless dedication\, passion and commitment to the Laconia Multicultural Festival. Many of these people have served on this board for countless years.
