SUMMARY:Concord - Finding Refuge: Crossroads Film and Discussion Series - The Human Flow
DESCRIPTION:The Human Flow \nWednesday\, February 27th\, 7 PM \nRed River Theatres  \n11 S Main St #L1 \nConcord\, NH 03301 \nTickets are free for the public\, but space is limited. Reserve your tickets today!\n \nREGISTER HERE \nAbout The Human Flow: \nOver 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine\, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow\, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei\, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact. Captured over the course of an eventful year in 23 countries\, the film follows a chain of urgent human stories that stretches across the globe in countries including Afghanistan\, Bangladesh\, France\, Greece\, Germany\, Iraq\, Israel\, Italy\, Kenya\, Mexico\, and Turkey. Human Flow is a witness to its subjects and their desperate search for safety\, shelter and justice: from teeming refugee camps to perilous ocean crossings to barbed-wire borders; from dislocation and disillusionment to courage\, endurance and adaptation; from the haunting lure of lives left behind to the unknown potential of the future. Human Flow comes at a crucial time when tolerance\, compassion and trust are needed more than ever. This visceral work of cinema is a testament to the unassailable human spirit and poses one of the questions that will define this century: Will our global society emerge from fear\, isolation\, and self-interest and choose a path of openness\, freedom\, and respect for humanity? \nWatch the Trailer:

SUMMARY:Portsmouth - Tell Me the Truth: Exploring the Heart of Cross-Racial Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Free \n\n\n\nPresenters: Shay Stewart-Bouley & Debby Irving \nHow can we speak openly and honestly in cross-racial conversations? What would such a conversation even sound like? Join Shay Stewart-Bouley (Black Girl in Maine) and author Debby Irving as they talk about racism’s impact on their lives and how conversation has been instrumental in their own understanding of 21st century racial dynamics. \nShay and Debby will explore the common fears and pitfalls of cross-racial conversation that keep people isolated in their own racial groups\, at the expense of personal\, professional\, and societal growth. They’ll also help audience members understand how interpersonal social patterns hinder organizations from living up to their own ideals for diversity and how good intentions can actually undermine collective progress.

SUMMARY:Manchester - Global Tipping Points with Melinda Negrón-Gonzales
DESCRIPTION:Global Tipping Points \nA three-part series on today’s global challenges \nMonday\, March 4th\, 6 PM-7:15 PM \nLocation: Multi-purpose Room\, UNH Manchester\, 88 Commercial Street (Pandora Mill)\, Manchester. Directions & Parking Info Here. (For safety and storm closure information\, check here)  \nTickets: \nWACNH Members\, Fulbright Members\, UNH Students and Staff- Free \nGeneral Public- $10 \nCounter-Terrorism and Human Rights in Turkey \nNegron-Gonzales will discuss how activists have attempted to hold the state accountable for human rights violations associated with counter-terrorism\, such as torture\, curfews and disappearances. What legal instruments and political mechanisms have been available to them\, and when have they been successful in pressuring the government to enact reform?  \n  \nAbout Melinda Negrón-Gonzales \n\n \nMelinda Negrón-Gonzales is Program Coordinator of the Politics and Society Program. She has taught at UNH since fall 2008 and teaches courses on international relations and comparative politics. \nNegrón-Gonzales’s research interests span the following areas: international politics\, Turkish Studies\, Middle Eastern Studies\, humanitarian intervention/responsibility to protect/human security\, social movements\, and democratization. She seeks to understand political and social change. \nOne strand of her research looks at changing ideas about humanitarian intervention – when the international community (working through the United Nations) attempts to prevent and respond to genocide\, crimes against humanity\, and war crimes. Recently\, she’s written about the international community’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Syria\, and also the Organization for Islamic Cooperation’s response to ISIS terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa.  \nNegrón-Gonzales also conducts research on social and political change in Turkey\, specifically exploring how social movements work to push democratization in Turkey. For example\, one of her recent publications examines how feminist activists in Turkey have attempted to shape legislative reform and advance women’s rights under an Islamic conservative government. \nPresented in partnership with UNH Manchester’s homeland security\, history\, humanities and politics and society programs\, the Fulbright Association\, and the Turkish Cultural Center of New Hampshire

SUMMARY:Concord - Finding Refuge: Crossroads Film Series - Anote's Ark
DESCRIPTION:Finding Refuge: Crossroads Film and Discussion Series \nAnote’s Ark \nWednesday\, March 20th\, 7 PM \nRed River Theatres  \n11 S Main St #L1 \nConcord\, NH 03301 \nTickets are free for the public\, but space is limited. Reserve your tickets today! \nAbout Anote’s Ark \nWhat happens when your nation is swallowed by the sea? With the harsh realities of climate change looming\, the low-lying Pacific nation Kiribati must find a new solution for the survival of its people. With sweeping cinematography\, Anote’s Ark interweaves two poignant stories. Anote Tong\, endearing president of the island\, races to find options-advocating in international climate negotiations and even investigating building underwater cities. At the same time\, warm and sharp-witted Sermery\, a young mother of six\, tackles every struggle with humour. She must decide whether to leave the only culture she knows on the island and migrate to a new life in New Zealand. Anote’s Ark captures the next evolution in the shifting dynamics of climate change-one where borders\, technology\, and global treaties are urgent and can change daily life as we know it. This portrait of the Kiribati people exudes strength of character and grace as they confront the inevitable change they are facing head-on. \nWatch the Trailer:

Reserve your tickets today!\n \nAbout Fire at Sea: \nSituated some 200km off Italy’s southern coast\, Lampedusa has hit world headlines in recent years as the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of African and Middle Eastern migrants hoping to make a new life in Europe. Rosi spent months living on the Mediterranean island\, capturing its history\, culture and the current everyday reality of its 6\,000-strong local population as hundreds of migrants land on its shores on a weekly basis. The resulting documentary focuses on 12-year-old Samuele\, a local boy who loves to hunt with his slingshot and spend time on land even though he hails from a culture steeped in the sea. \nWatch the Trailer:
