DESCRIPTION:My American Dream: A Life of Love\, Family\, and Food\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7pm — Writers on a New England Stage event \n8pm — Post-show Reception for Director’s Club begins. This reception is open to Patron-level members and up. Leave with her favorite recipes in hand! \nLidia’s story begins with her upbringing in Pula\, a formerly Italian city turned Yugoslavian under Tito’s communist regime. She enjoys a childhood surrounded by love and security—despite the family’s poverty—learning everything about Italian cooking from her beloved grandmother\, Nonna Rosa. When the communist regime begins investigating the family\, they flee to Trieste\, Italy\, where they spend two years in a refugee camp waiting for visas to enter the United States–an experience that will shape Lidia for the rest of her life. At age 12\, Lidia starts a new life in New York. She soon begins working in restaurants as a young teenager\, the first step toward the creation of her own American dream. And she tells in great\, vivid detail the fulfillment of that dream: her close-knit family\, her dedication and endless passion for food that ultimately leads to multiple restaurants\, many cookbooks\, and twenty years on public television as the host of her own cooking show. An absolute must-have/must-see for the millions of Lidia fans! \n\n\n\n\nA Partnership Between

SUMMARY:Concord - Finding Refuge: Crossroads Film Series - Anote's Ark
DESCRIPTION:Finding Refuge: Crossroads Film and Discussion Series \nAnote’s Ark \nWednesday\, March 20th\, 7 PM \nRed River Theatres  \n11 S Main St #L1 \nConcord\, NH 03301 \nTickets are free for the public\, but space is limited. Reserve your tickets today! \nAbout Anote’s Ark \nWhat happens when your nation is swallowed by the sea? With the harsh realities of climate change looming\, the low-lying Pacific nation Kiribati must find a new solution for the survival of its people. With sweeping cinematography\, Anote’s Ark interweaves two poignant stories. Anote Tong\, endearing president of the island\, races to find options-advocating in international climate negotiations and even investigating building underwater cities. At the same time\, warm and sharp-witted Sermery\, a young mother of six\, tackles every struggle with humour. She must decide whether to leave the only culture she knows on the island and migrate to a new life in New Zealand. Anote’s Ark captures the next evolution in the shifting dynamics of climate change-one where borders\, technology\, and global treaties are urgent and can change daily life as we know it. This portrait of the Kiribati people exudes strength of character and grace as they confront the inevitable change they are facing head-on. \nWatch the Trailer:

Reserve your tickets today!\n \nAbout Fire at Sea: \nSituated some 200km off Italy’s southern coast\, Lampedusa has hit world headlines in recent years as the first port of call for hundreds of thousands of African and Middle Eastern migrants hoping to make a new life in Europe. Rosi spent months living on the Mediterranean island\, capturing its history\, culture and the current everyday reality of its 6\,000-strong local population as hundreds of migrants land on its shores on a weekly basis. The resulting documentary focuses on 12-year-old Samuele\, a local boy who loves to hunt with his slingshot and spend time on land even though he hails from a culture steeped in the sea. \nWatch the Trailer:

SUMMARY:Songs of Emigration: Storytelling through Traditional Irish Music
DESCRIPTION:Through traditional music Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki relays some of the adventures\, misadventures\, and emotions experienced by Irish emigrants. The focus is on songs about leaving Ireland\, sometimes focusing on the reasons for leaving (a man who is driven from his land by English persecution)\, sometimes revealing what happened upon arrival (an immigrant drafted into the Union army during the Civil War)\, and sometimes exploring the universal feeling of homesickness of a stranger in a strange land (a factory worker in London missing his home in County Clare). The presenter discusses the historical context of these songs\, interspersing their stories with tunes from Ireland that made their way into New England’s musical repertoire\, played on his fiddle or guitar.

SUMMARY:Statewide Community Readings: Frederick Douglass's Fourth of July Speech
DESCRIPTION:Be Part of the Excitement as NH Communities Read Frederick Douglass …\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“What to the American Slave Is Your Fourth of July”\nNoon\, Wednesday\, July 3\, 2019\nOn July 5\, 1852\, Frederick Douglass gave a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration at Corinthian Hall in Rochester\, New York. It was a scathing speech in which Douglass stated\, “This Fourth of July is yours\, not mine\, You may rejoice\, I must mourn.” Even though his words spoke directly to his moment in history\, they still ring with an unsettling power today. \nCoordinated by the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire\, communities across the state will join in a simultaneous reading of Douglass’ most famous speech. Members of the public will take turns reading parts of the speech until they’ve read all of it\, together. Everyone is welcome to read; this event is free and open to the public. \nTowns and locations are listed below. All reading will start at noon. He became one of the most famous intellectuals of his time\, advising presidents and lecturing to thousands on a range of causes\, including women’s rights and Irish home rule. \nA fiery orator\, Douglass’s speeches were often published in various abolitionist newspapers. Among his well-known speeches is “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro\,” presented in Rochester\, New York\, on July 5\, 1852\, a version of which he published as a booklet. There were approximately 500 attendees who heard him speak. \nDouglass had been invited to speak about what the Fourth of July means for America’s black population\, and while the first part of his speech praises what the founding fathers did for this country\, his speech soon develops into a condemnation of the attitude of American society toward slavery.
