SUMMARY:Online - Peace & Justice Conversations: Why Work with Youth?
DESCRIPTION:Join NHPA with NH Youth Movement co-founder and former board member of NH Peace Action Griffin Sinclaire-Wingate as he talks about his work to harness the energy of young people to create political change. \nThroughout his 26 years Griffin has worked in a variety of movements and issue areas. In highschool he became involved in the anti-war movement through New Hampshire Peace Action. Upon starting college at the University of New Hampshire Griffin reignited the fossil fuel divestment campaign. As the 2016 presidential primary revved up Griffin shifted his work from targeting campus administration to targeting politicians. During this time he worked with a handful of organizations to push presidential candidates to take bold climate stances and get out the youth vote. The outcomes of the 2016 election solidified the growing idea that the progressive movement needed to get serious about wielding political power and winning elections. As his time at UNH came to a close Griffin became the co-director of 350 New Hampshire and coordinated their Offshore Wind Campaign and Pipeline Resistance Campaign (both were victorious). Still focused on the need to build progressive political power Griffin started laying the groundwork for a youth lead movement that would leverage the political power of young people to elect lawmakers who will fight for a livable future with good jobs\, health\, and education for all. In the fall of 2017 Griffin launched New Hampshire Youth Movement with a group of his college organizing friends. He currently serves as a Co-Director of New Hampshire Youth Movement. Outside of organizing Griffin makes pottery at a local studio in Rochester and enjoys writing music.

DESCRIPTION:America has a long and troubled history of segregated public spaces. When Amy Cooper called the police on Christian Cooper (no relation) in Central Park last year\, the incident underscored a familiar script that continues America’s legacy of enslavement. Some whites perceive African Americans who venture into public spaces as dangerous and disruptive intruders. All it took was a white woman to spout a racist dog whistle and the park\, a public space\, was made unsafe for a Black man. \nThe 2021 Tea Talk Series\, as a way to rethink our assumptions about race and place\, explores how African Americans navigate various “white spaces”\, spaces where Blacks and People of Color are marginalized\, typically absent\, and unexpected. Yahso Jamaican Grille features authentic Jamaican Cuisine as well as some modern fusion of Caribbean-American dishes. The restaurant is best known for its “feel good” food and a “casual vibe” that captures the essence of a Caribbean island. Before launching this local eatery\, Gail held various positions in finance and sales with major food manufacturing and distribution companies. She also serves on several boards and committees for causes she is very passionate about\, including the Keene Racial Justice and Safety Committee and the Monadnock Area Transitional Shelter. \nGeno Miller – Born and raised in the Washington\, DC\, area\, Geno is the cofounder and CEO of Shtudy\, a Manchester-based career matchmaking platform that screens\, trains\, and connects top tech talent of color with companies that are building more diverse and inclusive workforces. Geno has a profound love for scaling companies and solving social problems that improve peoples’ lives. Geno has founded four successful startups since age 14. In his leisure time\, you can find him listening to Lil Wayne or Jay-Z\, reading a book about Ray Dalio\, blogging about the latest topics in tech\, or brainstorming with other mission-driven tech founders. \nJose Diaz – Jose Diaz is founder of Spyglass Eyewear\, a Laconia-based optical boutique shop featuring one-on-one curated experiences. Spyglass Eyewear carries its own brand of eyewear and offers convenient tele-medicine vision exams. Jose has more than 20 years in the optical industry. Originally from New York City\, Jose started his career working with some of the top eyewear designers in the city. In 2004 he relocated to Boston\, opening an eyewear company on Newbury Street. He learned that creating a memorable and unique experience with a quality product is key to building a brand. After moving to Boston\, most weekends were spent in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. With a growing family\, Jose and his wife decided to move to Gilford in 2016. In July 2020 Spyglass Eyewear opened its doors in Laconia. With a downtown redevelopment project already on the way\, the opening of the shop was welcomed with open arms. His scholarship and teaching focus on the force of settler colonialism on Indigenous peoples and their ongoing resistance in the form of alternative ways of thought and action to the predatory capitalism embedded in settler existence.\nHis most recent book is The Disinformation Age: The Collapse of Liberal Democracy in the United States (PaperBoat Press\, 2019)\, which in its final chapter\, “Thinking From A Different Place: What Is A Just Society?\,” offers\, beyond “the limits of capitalism’s imagination\,” an Indigenous alternative to the way out of the current crisis of climate collapse and wealth inequality.
