SUMMARY:Manchester - Bearing Witness: Black Art in Public Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Black Heritage Trail of NH presents: \nBearing Witness: Black Art in Public Spaces \nFrom the Black Power and Black Arts movements of the 20th century to the Black Lives Matter movement of today\, artists of color have created public art that provided a communal vision of history\, heritage\, and hope. Recently the works of three culturally conscious Black artists – the bronze head of a Black woman by Simone Leigh\, four Afrofuturistic females by Wangechi Mutu\, and the 20-foot sculpture of a dreadlocked black male rider on a stallion by Kehinde Wiley – have set a new standard for what is memorialized in public art:  Imaginative Black Identities. \nFor this program\, panelists will explore the public art scene in New Hampshire. Presenters will share their thoughts on questions such as: What is Black art?  What does it mean to be a Black artist today? Should the work of artists of color always speak to and reflect the Black experience?  What happens when Black art bears witness to a non-white presence and enters “white” spaces? \nEvent is Free & Open to the Public. Time TBD. \nPresenters:\nSam Collins III\, Juneteenth Historian & Public Art Creator\, Galveston\, TX\nJoel Christian-Gill\, Graphic novelist and cartoonist\, Derry\, NH\nRichard Haynes\, Artist\, Educator & Visual Storyteller\, Portsmouth\, NH\nCecilia Ulibarri\, President & Co-Founders Positive Street Art\, Nashua\, NH\nManuel “Phelany” Ramirez\, Artist-In-Residence & Co-Founder Positive Street Art\, Nashua\, NH \nComplete event information

SUMMARY:Online - Uproar: A Celebration of African American Creativity
DESCRIPTION:Derived from African culture and dance\, the art of stepping was created by the enslaved when enslavers refused to let them communicate with drums. Stepping uses the body as an instrument that incorporates slapping the arms\, legs\, and chest. Made popular by historically Black Greek organizations\, today\, this art form combines chanting\, singing\, and dancing. \nUproar is a high-energy performance that introduces audiences to the unique lineages of this African American dance and demonstrates how enslaved people on American soil used stepping as a vehicle for communication\, self-expression\, and joy. This performance features an intergenerational step team\, poets\, and musicians. \nProducer: Najee Brown\, Founder Theater for the People\, Eliot\, ME \nThis event is brought to you in partnership with Theater for The People. \nComplete event information here

SUMMARY:16th Annual Black New England Conference: Where the Money Resides: An Exploration of Racialized Access & Historic Exclusion from Wealth
DESCRIPTION:A Virtual/Hybrid Conference\n\n“I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that financial literacy\, economic empowerment\, and wealth building is going to be the last leg of the civil rights movement. Because one step toward financial literacy takes you two steps toward personal empowerment.” — Russell Simmons \nFor hundreds of years Black families\, Indigenous populations\, and People of Color have been denied access to the opportunity to build wealth. At the same time\, these opportunities were available to middle-class white America which allowed them to accumulate capital and pass it on to future generations. \nA 2021 McKinsey & Company report estimates a $330 billion disparity between Black and white families in the annual flow of new wealth.  By 2064\, white families will possess $2\, 782\, 727 in wealth while a Black family will have $789\,164 —a 70% disparity. \nThe 16th annual Black New England Conference will review the legal framework that supported institutional practices that were barriers to wealth for non-whites. The conference will also explore the challenges and history of the social and cultural environment that supported practices such as racial zoning\, redlining\, school segregation\, and government-sanctioned racism. \nWhere the Money Resides will also celebrate the success stories of both individuals and institutions that serve as beacons of hope for current generations. \nThe Black New England Conference is an annual 2-day gathering where academics\, artists\, activists\, and community members share insights and research on Black experiences\, past and present\, in New England and beyond. The Conference is both an academic conference and a celebration of Black life and history. \nVisit: https://blackheritagetrailnh.org/black-new-england-conference-2022/ \nCONFERENCE PANELS INCLUDE\nThe Rise and Fall of Enslaved and Free Black of Affluence \nBy Decree: Laws & Systemic Barriers to the Acquisition of Wealth \nThe Myth of Black Exceptionalism: Paths to Black Economic Power \nWealth Matters in Black & White \nA Generous Spirit: Black Philanthropy Then & Now \nEconomic Power\, Black Entrepreneurship\, and the New Virtual Economy \n  \nVisit: https://blackheritagetrailnh.org/black-new-england-conference-2022/
