DESCRIPTION:The Dawnland StoryFest is a warm spot in cold and snowy February and – New Hampshire’s only annual Native American Storytelling Festival. This is the 5th year anniversary for the festival and its first year at the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum in Warner\, NH. Please join us if you love to listen to traditional Native American stories – and if you’d like to learn more about Native American storytelling. \nThe Dawnland StoryFest was originally created almost five years ago\, by New Hampshire storyteller Papa Joe Gaudet\, as a showcase for Francis “Medicine Story” Talbot\, a New Hampshire storyteller who for many years shared traditional Native American stories with his audiences. This year\, the Dawnland StoryFest 2019 moves to its new home at the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum in Warner\, NH and will be dedicated in memory of two accomplished New Hampshire tellers of Native American lesson stories\, who both passed away in 2018 – the well-known storyteller\, Francis “Medicine Story” Talbot and accomplished storyteller\, Peter “Bearded Turtle” Brodeur. \nCome hear experienced Native American storytellers share traditional tales during the heart of the Winter Storytelling Season. \nFor the first time\, this year’s featured teller is a woman! Anne Jennison is an award winning storyteller of European and Abenaki descent who has been telling traditional Native American lesson stories for 30 years. \nAlso featured are: Crow HearsCrow\, Darlene Kascak\, Angela Klingler\, Sebastian Lockwood\, Papa Joe Gaudet\, and Simon Brooks as the MC. As you listen to these masterful tellers of traditional Native American stories\, consider whether you might want to approach one of them about mentoring you in you goal to deepen your own storytelling skills. In addition to hearing stories\, there will also be a discussion that touches on ideas about what Native American stories are appropriate to tell\, as well as when\, where\, why\, and how to tell them. There will also be an opportunity for you to share a traditional Native American story\, if you have one prepared that you’d lie to try out in the presence of a very receptive audience of listeners!. \nThe Festival takes place each year on the first Saturday in February\, during the heart of the winter storytelling season. In this\, its 5th year the Dawnland Storyfest 2019 is changing homes. Formerly held at the Mariposa Museum & Cultural Center in Peterborough\, NH\, starting this year\, the Dawnland Storyfest will now be held at the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum in Warner\, NH. The very modest admission fee for this event is $5.50. SUMMARY:February is Black History Month!
DESCRIPTION:The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)’s 2019 theme Black Migrations emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities. While inclusive of earlier centuries\, this theme focuses especially on the twentieth century through today. Beginning in the early decades of the twentieth century\, African American migration patterns included relocation from southern farms to southern cities; from the South to the Northeast\, Midwest\, and West; from the Caribbean to US cities as well as to migrant labor farms; and the emigration of noted African Americans to Africa and to European cities\, such as Paris and London\, after the end of World War I and World War II.  Such migrations resulted in a more diverse and stratified interracial and intra-racial urban population amid a changing social milieu\, such as the rise of the Garvey movement in New York\, Detroit\, and New Orleans; the emergence of both black industrial workers and black entrepreneurs; the growing number and variety of urban churches and new religions; new music forms like ragtime\, blues\, and jazz; white backlash as in the Red Summer of 1919; the blossoming of visual and literary arts\, as in New York\, Washington\, D.C.\, Chicago\, and Paris in the 1910s and 1920s. The theme Black Migrations equally lends itself to the exploration of the century’s later decades from spatial and social perspectives\, with attention to “new” African Americans because of the burgeoning African and Caribbean population in the US; Northern African Americans’ return to the South; racial suburbanization; inner-city hyperghettoization; health and environment; civil rights and protest activism; electoral politics; mass incarceration; and dynamic cultural production. \nASALH Announces 2019 Black History Theme\, Black Migrations

DESCRIPTION:Songs of Emigration: Storytelling Through Traditional Irish Music\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThrough traditional music Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki relays some of the adventures\, misadventures\, and emotions experienced by Irish emigrants. The focus is on songs about leaving Ireland\, sometimes focusing on the reasons for leaving (a man who is driven from his land by English persecution)\, sometimes revealing what happened upon arrival (an immigrant drafted into the Union army during the Civil War)\, and sometimes exploring the universal feeling of homesickness of a stranger in a strange land (a factory worker in London missing his home in County Clare). The presenter discusses the historical context of these songs\, interspersing their stories with tunes from Ireland that made their way into New England’s musical repertoire\, played on his fiddle or guitar.

We know that organizations strive to ensure this opportunity by providing high quality services that are accessible to all in NH – yet achieving this can be challenging. Many of us have simply not had access to training about an effective approach that would turn our goals into broader success. \nThe good news is that a roadmap exists; there is a framework to provide high quality services for all called the Culturally Effective Organizations Framework. Integrated Delivery Networks\, Southern NH AHEC and other members of the NH Health & Equity Partnership will be hosting learning forums to teach organizations about the essential pathways for success. \nThis program is offered at no cost to participants. \nTarget Audience: This Learning Forum is especially suited to individuals (organization leaders\, senior staff or decision-makers) able to effect change within their organization.
