DESCRIPTION:For nearly 20 years\, the U.S. government has prosecuted migration-related offenses in greater numbers than any other type of federal offense in the United States. Most recently\, the Trump administration has used migration-related prosecutions as part of its anti-immigrant policymaking in ways that systematically separate families and violate national and international legal obligations. \nOn Tuesday August 4th\, join us in the National Immigrant Justice Center’s (NIJC) Policy Corner to learn about a year-long investigation into rights violations stemming from prosecutions for unauthorized entry and reentry. Jesse Franzblau\, the lead author of NIJC’s new report about the investigation\, will discuss our research findings on rights violations\, which include the separation of families\, violations of asylum laws and due process protections\, and dehumanizing and racist treatment of migrants. Based on structured interviews\, court observation\, and in-depth analysis of internal government files obtained through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests\, this report moves us closer to decriminalizing migration. \n**NIJC’s Policy Corner are monthly presentations to provide updates on policy matters affecting immigration. As the COVID-19 pandemic has crossed the country\, the Navajo tribe has been disproportionately impacted by the virus\, facing some of the highest rates in the United States. \nChronic underfunding for health and infrastructure for tribal nations coupled with the historical trauma that has come from centuries of forced relocation and other federal policies are now compounding the impacts of COVID-19. Prevention efforts including social distancing and increased hand-washing are particularly challenging to maintain across the Navajo Nation\, due in large part to the 30-40% of households without access to running water or electricity\, widespread food insecurity\, and large number of multi-generational households. \nDuring this webinar we will be joined by Dr. Patricia Nez Henderson\, Vice President of the Black Hills Center for American Indian Health and a member of the Diné (Navajo) tribe\, to explore:\n•    Historical causes of the health and infrastructure inequities in the Navajo Nation\n•    Strategies to incorporate tribal values and customs with western knowledge and medicine to address health crises\n•    Policies and strategies that can reduce barriers to health and opportunity in tribal communities \nThere will be a one-hour interactive virtual discussion at 4pm ET\, immediately following the webinar.
