SUMMARY:Conway - Digging Into Native History in New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Abenaki history has been reduced to near-invisibility as a result of conquest\, a conquering culture that placed little value on the Indian experience\, and a strategy of self-preservation that required many Abenaki to go “underground\,” concealing their true identities for generations to avoid discrimination and persecution. Robert Goodby reveals archaeological evidence that shows their deep presence here\, inches below the earth’s surface.

SUMMARY:Deering - "If I Am Not For Myself\, Who Will Be for Me?"
DESCRIPTION:“If I Am Not For Myself\, Who Will Be for Me?” George Washington’s Runaway Slave\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOney Judge Staines\, according to the Constitution\, was only three-fifths of a person. To her masters\, George and Martha Washington\, she was merely “the girl.” All she wanted was the freedom to control her own actions\, but her account of escaping the Executive Mansion in Philadelphia\, fleeing north and establishing a life in New Hampshire is not a typical runaway story. Portrayed by Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti\, Oney’s tale provides an alternative perspective on the new nation’s social\, political\, and economic development\, from one whose personal experience so contradicted the promise of the principles embodied in the nation’s founding documents.

SUMMARY:North Woodstock - NH Abolitionist Nathaniel Peabody Rogers
DESCRIPTION:New Hampshire Abolitionist Nathaniel Peabody Rogers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuccessful attorney–and father of eight–Nathaniel Peabody Rogers walked away from his Plymouth\, NH\, law practice in the 1830s for a dangerous and nearly unpaid gig editing a Concord-based anti-slavery newspaper\, the Herald of Freedom. Plymouth State University historian Rebecca R. Noel tells the story of this feisty Granite State native\, one of the so-called New Hampshire radicals. Rogers’ dedication to abolition and racial inclusion took several forms in his relatively short life. He sheltered fugitives in Plymouth and Concord\, co-founded the integrated Noyes Academy in Canaan\, networked with major abolitionists including Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison\, and above all wrote passionate\, searing essays against slavery and racism. Henry David Thoreau admired Rogers’ political zeal and his beautiful nature writing about the White Mountains\, published under the pseudonym “The Old Man of the Mountain\,” and abolitionist poet John Pierpont called Rogers the best newspaper writer in the United States. Rogers’ story shines a light on this lively reform era\, and his contributions to the crusade for social justice still resonate today.

SUMMARY:Portsmouth - Finding Refuge: Crossroads Film Series - Human Flow
DESCRIPTION:Finding Refuge: Crossroads Film and Discussion Series \nHuman Flow \nTuesday\, September 10th\, 6 PM \nPortsmouth Public Library \n175 Parrott Avenue\, Portsmouth\, NH 03801 \nAbout Human Flow: \nOver 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine\, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow\, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei\, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact. Captured over the course of an eventful year in 23 countries\, the film follows a chain of urgent human stories that stretches across the globe in countries including Afghanistan\, Bangladesh\, France\, Greece\, Germany\, Iraq\, Israel\, Italy\, Kenya\, Mexico\, and Turkey. Human Flow is a witness to its subjects and their desperate search for safety\, shelter and justice: from teeming refugee camps to perilous ocean crossings to barbed-wire borders; from dislocation and disillusionment to courage\, endurance and adaptation; from the haunting lure of lives left behind to the unknown potential of the future. Human Flow comes at a crucial time when tolerance\, compassion and trust are needed more than ever. This visceral work of cinema is a testament to the unassailable human spirit and poses one of the questions that will define this century: Will our global society emerge from fear\, isolation\, and self-interest and choose a path of openness\, freedom\, and respect for humanity?

SUMMARY:Concord - SEA Movie Night Premiere: Suppressed
DESCRIPTION:A free screening of SUPPRESSED and a facilitated discussion afterwards. \nVoter suppression is one of the biggest dangers to American elections. During the 2018 midterms\, millions of voters experienced suppression due to voter roll purges\, poll closures\, long lines of over 4 hours\, missing absentee ballots\, and strict voter ID laws that disproportionately prevented Brown and Black citizens from their constitutional right to vote. \nIn Suppressed: The Fight to Vote\, Brave New Films weaves together personal stories from voters across the state of Georgia to paint an undeniable picture of voter suppression. In a race that was ultimately decided by 54\,723 votes\, it is clear that the basic constitutional right to vote continues to be under siege. 2020 is coming and we must fight to protect this fundamental right – #FightToVote! \nThe SEA’s Campaign for Public Good and the Social Activities committee bring you this great event along with Co-Sponsors; Rights & Democracy Granite State Progress\, Granite State Organizing Project\, Open Democracy\, American Friends Service Committee NH and Kent Street Coalition. The event is open to members\, friends and family\, we’ll supply the popcorn\, you bring snacks to share and it’s a responsible BYOB event. \nAny Questions email PublicGood@SEIU1984.org

SUMMARY:Nashua - Suitcase Stories
DESCRIPTION:Suitcase Stories® is a signature program of the International Institute of New England. It raises the profile of refugees and immigrants while strengthening community through the art of storytelling. \nLaunched in 2016\, Suitcase Stories began as a traveling live performance series featuring foreign and U.S.-born residents sharing powerful refugee and immigrant stories. Since its initial year\, the initiative has expanded to include programming customized for community partners. To date\, more than 3\,000 people have enjoyed a mainstage performance and thousands more have watched a taped episode on PBS television. The response from those audience members spoke of how the performance challenged and expanded their perceptions of refugees and immigrants.
