SUMMARY:Concord - Coercion in International Politics
DESCRIPTION:COERCION IN INTERNATIONAL POLITICS\nKelly Greenhill and Peter Krause are the editors of Coercion: The Power to Hurt in International Politics (Oxford University Press\, 2018). From the rising significance of non-state actors to the increasing influence of regional powers\, the nature and conduct of international politics has changed dramatically since the Cold War era. This book examines intra-state\, inter-state\, and transnational coercion and deterrence as well as both military and non-military instruments of persuasion\, thus expanding our understanding of coercion for conflict in the 21st century. \nGreenhill and Krause will discuss the book’s key findings as well as their implications for ongoing security challenges facing the US today\, including insurgencies\, cyber attacks\, refugee and migration flows\, nuclear proliferation\, and more. \nKelly Greenhill’s Bio \n\n \nKelly M. Greenhill is a professor of political science and international relations at Tufts University and a research fellow at Harvard University.Greenhill is author of the award-winning Weapons of Mass Migration: Forced Displacement\, Coercion\, and Foreign Policy\, and co-author and co-editor of Sex\, Drugs\, and Body Counts: The Politics of Numbers in Global Crime and Conflict; The Use of Force: Military Power and International Politics\, 8th ed.;and Coercion: The Power to Hurt in International Politics. ​Greenhill is currently completing a new book that explores the influence on international politics of rumors\, conspiracy theories\, “fake news” and other forms of extra-factual information. \nGreenhill’s work has also appeared in an array of peer-reviewed journals and international media outlets\, such as the New York Times\, BBC\, and Foreign Affairs. Her research has been employed in legal briefs in cases argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and in policy briefs and planning guidance for other organs of the government. Outside of academia\, Greenhill has served as a consultant to the United Nations and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees\, the World Bank\, and the Ford Foundation; as an analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense; and as an economic policy intern for then Senator John Kerry. Greenhill holds an SM and a PhD from MIT\, a CSS from Harvard University\, and a BA from UC Berkeley.  \nPeter Krause Bio \n\n \nPeter Krause is an Associate Professor of political science at Boston College and a Research Affiliate with the MIT Security Studies Program. His research and writing focuses on Middle East politics\, political violence\, and national movements. He recently published Rebel Power: Why National Movements Compete\, Fight\, and Win (Cornell University Press\, 2017) and a co-edited volume Coercion: The Power to Hurt in International Politics (Oxford University Press\, 2018). He is currently working on projects that analyze which factions take power after regime change and the impact of education on attitudes about terrorism. Krause has conducted extensive fieldwork throughout the Middle East over the past decade. He has offered his analysis of Middle East politics and political violence in the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill\, as well as with national and local media. He has a BA from Williams College in political science and history and a PhD in political science from MIT. Krause was formerly a Research Fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies of Brandeis University\, as well as a Research Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs of the Harvard Kennedy School.

At 9:00am we will host a press conference in the Lobby of the Legislative Office Building to lift up our report: “New Hampshire Together: Voices from the Granite State” and announce our NH People’s Platform. After the press conference we will head to the state house with our issue signs to show our strength on the statehouse steps and in the halls of the statehouse to greet even more incoming legislators and share our NH People’s Platform with them. http://www.radnh.org/peoplesplatform \n“New Hampshire Together: Voices from the Granite State” is the result of a survey of 889 residents who filled out the New Hampshire Community Survey. This report is part of a national Rural and Small-Town Organizing Strategy launched earlier this year by People’s Action\, a national organization of which Rights & Democracy New Hampshire is an affiliate. \nWe talked to people in communities throughout New Hampshire – at farmers’ markets\, community meetings\, parades\, at their doorsteps and on the phone – they shared both the same deep concerns and broad agreement on common solutions. \nWe found strong agreement among substantial majorities that the major issues facing Granite State families and communities are: lack of access to affordable health care; the impact of the overdose crisis; quality public education; jobs that don’t pay enough; the cost of meeting the basics in life; the affordability of college and career training; and pollution of land and water. \nDownload the Full Report (PDF) here:\nhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1ORxtngyoigwhN17xP_ylRSguD-yiYSyS/view

We know that organizations strive to ensure this opportunity by providing high quality services that are accessible to all in NH – yet achieving this can be challenging. Many of us have simply not had access to training about an effective approach that would turn our goals into broader success. \nThe good news is that a roadmap exists; there is a framework to provide high quality services for all called the Culturally Effective Organizations Framework. Integrated Delivery Networks\, Southern NH AHEC and other members of the NH Health & Equity Partnership will be hosting learning forums to teach organizations about the essential pathways for success. \nThis program is offered at no cost to participants. \nTarget Audience: This Learning Forum is especially suited to individuals (organization leaders\, senior staff or decision-makers) able to effect change within their organization. DESCRIPTION:Songs of Emigration: Storytelling Through Traditional Irish Music\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThrough traditional music Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki relays some of the adventures\, misadventures\, and emotions experienced by Irish emigrants. The focus is on songs about leaving Ireland\, sometimes focusing on the reasons for leaving (a man who is driven from his land by English persecution)\, sometimes revealing what happened upon arrival (an immigrant drafted into the Union army during the Civil War)\, and sometimes exploring the universal feeling of homesickness of a stranger in a strange land (a factory worker in London missing his home in County Clare). The presenter discusses the historical context of these songs\, interspersing their stories with tunes from Ireland that made their way into New England’s musical repertoire\, played on his fiddle or guitar.
