SUMMARY:Manchester - The Story of Us
DESCRIPTION:Immigration. Storytelling. One Night. \nThe Story of Us. The Stories you do not know. \nA Free Event \nCelebrate Welcoming Manchester‘s Welcoming Week\, an annual celebration that invites communities across America to bring their immigrants and U.S.-born residents together. \nEveryday the media floods our lives with news stories about the immigrant crisis. Often times\, the experiences of the people living in the throes of it are silenced by design. Not anymore. We are refocusing the lens. \n“The Story of Us” is a one night event that uses the power of storytelling to explore the lives of immigrants from local communities. Several will be joining us to share their stories live. Join us as they recount their journeys to the United States and share their experiences as immigrants in our communities. This program will offer live storytelling\, a mixed media exhibit\, and opportunities for community dialogue and interaction. \nNo person’s story is alike\, yet all of our stories are connected. Our experiences are parts of a larger human narrative. We encourage you to learn about the stories you don’t know. We invite you to The Story of Us. \n*Join us as we start new conversations about immigration/refugee resettlement\, community\, and inclusion.* \nKya Roumimper will be one of the hosts. We recently held “The Story of Us Premiere” in April as the final thesis event of Kya’s M.Ed program at Merrimack College. Kya will share her discovery and findings from that event. \nLocation: Jupiter Hall\nDate: Friday\, September 21\, 2018\nTime: 6:30pm-9pm\nRefreshments will be served \nFor more information please contact Katie Bérubé at katie@jupiterhallnh.com \nAbout Jupiter Hall\nJupiter Hall is a community-oriented Multi-purpose venue located in Manchester\, NH where communities experience arts\, culture and innovation. SUMMARY:Exeter - Rally for Immigrant Rights: Keep Communities Safe & Free
DESCRIPTION:Join ACLU and American Friends Service Committee for a rally at the Exeter Bandstand on October 6th from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM! We need to ensure that our local communities are safe and welcoming places for all people\, including immigrants. That means making sure that local police departments are not questioning people about their immigration statuses\, detaining them\, and turning them over to ICE. \nPlease bring signs\, family\, and friends. We will also plan on having extra signs there.\n—————– \nOn August 10th\, Bashar Awawdeh helped the Exeter PD with its investigation of an alleged simple assault by providing translation services that enabled the Department to questions and ultimately arrest a suspect. The Department returned the favor by then unlawfully detaining\, seizing\, and arresting Awawdeh on the suspicion that he was in the United States without documentation. Exeter Police then handed Awawdeh over to ICE where he was detained away from his family for 26 days until he was released on bond with the help of our lawyers. This is not okay. \nUnfortunately\, many local police departments in NH -including Exeter\, Salem\, and Danbury routinely- take on the work of immigration enforcement. Not only are these practices unlawful\, they are deeply harmful to public safety and contradict our “Live Free or Die” principles. As a community we must raise our voices to demand that local police not only end these practices but that they implement policies that make ALL of their communities members safe and free.

SUMMARY:North Woodstock - Uprooted: Heartache and Hope in New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Uprooted is a 30-minute documentary based on interviews collected during New Hampshire Humanities’ Fences & Neighbors initiative on immigration. It tells the story of five refugees who escaped from war-torn countries to resettle in New Hampshire. The film explores what it means to be a refugee and how it feels to make a new life in a strange place\, often without English language skills\, family\, a job\, or community contacts. The film leaves us pondering questions of belonging and citizenship. What does it mean to be an American? Once a refugee\, are you destined always to be a refugee? What are our responsibilities toward one another?  A New Hampshire Humanities presenter introduces the film and leads a post-film discussion. See bios and contact information in Presenter Directory for Whitney Howarth\, John Krueckeberg and Sara Withers.

SUMMARY:Dunbarton - All Eyes Are Upon Us: Racial Struggles in the Northeast\, from Jackie Robinson to Deval Patrick
DESCRIPTION:From Brooklyn to Boston\, from World War II to the present\, Jason Sokol traces the modern history of race and politics in the Northeast. Why did white fans come out to support Jackie Robinson as he broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947 even as Brooklyn’s blacks were shunted into segregated neighborhoods? How was African-American politician Ed Brooke of Massachusetts\, who won a Senate seat in 1966\, undone by the resistance to desegregation busing in Boston? Is the Northeast’s history a microcosm of America as a whole: outwardly democratic\, but inwardly conflicted over race?
