That’s the focus of the upcoming EmpowerYOU Community Learning Series organized by Makin’ It Happen. Once a month from 6-8pm at Jupiter Hall (89 Hanover Street\, Manchester\, NH)\, community members are invited to participate in this series to help make a difference in the health of their neighborhoods. The series kicks off on November 13th with “Understanding Addiction” presented by Serenity Place. \nMakin’ It Happen is a regional coalition on a mission to build resilient communities. Focused on educating families about potential warning signs\, when to worry\, and what to do if they have concerns. They want the public to be aware of the innovative and collaborative work being done to better understand and treat substance use disorders. They want to share success stories of people overcoming their addiction. They want to empower everyone to be a part of the solution. Makin’ It Happen facilitates a monthly collaborative meeting of substance use disorder providers working in prevention\, treatment and recovery. The group is working together on many collaborative efforts to fortify regional communities including community education and engagement such as the learning series. \nThis series is a collaborative effort\, which currently includes the following partners: Manchester Health Department\, Network4Health\, Southern NH Planning Commission\, Families in Transition\, New Futures\, NNE Poison Control\, Serenity Place\, Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester\, National Alliance for Mental Illness NH\, Teen Institute\, Hope for NH Recovery\, NH Harm Reduction Coalition and Partnership for a Drug-Free NH. The series is expected to continue and add additional partners\, sponsors and presenters as it builds.

DESCRIPTION:Uprooted is a 30-minute documentary based on interviews collected during the Humanities Council’s Fences & Neighbors initiative on immigration. It tells the story of five refugees who escaped from war-torn countries to resettle in New Hampshire. The film explores what it means to be a refugee and how it feels to make a new life in a strange place\, often without English language skills\, family\, a job\, or community contacts. The film leaves us pondering questions of belonging and citizenship. What does it mean to be an American? Once a refugee\, are you destined always to be a refugee? What are our responsibilities toward one another?  A New Hampshire Humanities presenter introduces the film and leads a post-film discussion. DESCRIPTION:Through traditional music Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki relays some of the adventures\, misadventures\, and emotions experienced by Irish emigrants. The focus is on songs about leaving Ireland\, sometimes focusing on the reasons for leaving (a man who is driven from his land by English persecution); sometimes revealing what happened upon arrival (an immigrant drafted into the Union army during the Civil War); and sometimes exploring the universal feeling of homesickness of a stranger in a strange land (a factory worker in London missing his home in County Clare). The presenter discusses the historical context of these songs\, interspersing their stories with tunes from Ireland that made their way into New England’s musical repertoire\, played on his fiddle or guitar.

Decorating the streets with luminaria is a Spanish-inspired holiday tradition\, popular in many parts of the world. \nYou can purchase a luminaria – a battery-operated tribute candle placed in a white bag – for a $3.00 donation online\, or at the Stroll at 147 Main Street. Your candle\, with the name of the person you are honoring\, will be placed along the RiverWalk\, and it will be visible during the Holiday Stroll from the bridge on Main Street. Supplies will be available at the event for those who wish to decorate their own luminaria.\nProceeds from the tributes will be used to defray legal costs for our neighbors who are newly resettled in Nashua\, such as refugees and immigrants currently seeking permanent resident status and citizenship. \nAs members of the community\, we recognize that we are blessed. Jones MD\, MPH\, PhD\nHealth equity means that everyone has the chance to be as healthy as possible. Health equity means reducing and eliminating disparities in health and its determinants that adversely affect excluded or marginalized groups. Health equity is inextricably linked with opportunity. It requires addressing obstacles to health such as poverty\, discrimination\, and their consequences\, including powerlessness and lack of access to good jobs with fair pay\, quality education and housing\, safe environments\, and healthcare. Health equity is fundamental to building a vibrant society because of its practical\, economic\, and civic implications and impact on individuals living a good life. \nDr. Jones is a family physician and epidemiologist whose work focuses on the impacts of racism on the health and well-being of the nation. She seeks to broaden the national health debate to include not only universal access to high-quality healthcare but also attention to the social determinants of health (including poverty) and the social determinants of equity (including racism). Dr. Jones is the immediate past president of the American Public Health Association \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary. \nThis public lecture is supported by an endowment to the Hitchcock Foundation from the late Helmut Wolfgang Schumann to provide a free lecture by a nationally renowned figure on topics related to healthful living. This year’s lecture will kick off the annual event for public health officials called “Team Up\, Take Action: Improving Population Health Together\,” co-sponsored by the New Hampshire Public Health Association\, the Vermont Public Health Association and Dartmouth-Hitchcock. SUMMARY:Milford - Becky Sakellariou  - All Refugee Lives Matter
DESCRIPTION:Becky Sakellariou\, who lives in both New Hampshire and in Greece\, has been involved with the refugees in Greece since they began pouring into that country from Turkey 2 1/2 years ago.  She has visited transient camps with a team of midwives\, emergency landing camps\, and taught and worked in a couple of the 40+ mainland camps that are now home to about 65\,000 refugees.  She has also raised funds for goods\, foods\, clothes\, toys and other needed items for about 7 NGOs operating at very small centers\, both urban and rural.  She will talk about her experiences\, her perspectives and show slides to illustrate what is happening.
