She is an award-winning journalist who has reported for Time magazine\, CBS News\, and Sports Illustrated. She edited Nieman Reports at Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation for Journalism for 13 years. To pursue her writing in social and political justice issues\, she was awarded academic fellowships from Harvard University\, Radcliffe College\, and Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. In 2010 Ludtke received the Yankee Quill Award for lifetime achievement as a journalist. \nMs. Ludtke made history while covering baseball as a reporter for Sports Illustrated. After Commissioner Bowie Kuhn denied her access to interview ballplayers in team locker rooms\, Time Inc.\, the company that owned Sports Illustrated\, filed a federal lawsuit (Ludtke v. Kuhn). The lawsuit claimed that Major League Baseball’s media policy of providing unequal access to women reporters violated her rights under the Fourteenth Amendment by depriving her of the liberty to fully pursue a career in sports reporting. In September 1978\, a federal judge agreed\, establishing equal access to locker rooms for women reporters. Her papers related to this groundbreaking suit are archived at Harvard’s Schlesinger Library\, and her oral history of this period in time is preserved as part of the Washington Press Club Foundation’s Women in Journalism oral history project.

SUMMARY:Laconia - Songs of Old New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Drawing heavily on the repertoire of traditional singer Lena Bourne Fish (1873-1945) of Jaffrey and Temple\, New Hampshire\, Jeff Warner offers the songs and stories that\, in the words of Carl Sandburg\, tell us “where we came from and what brought us along.” These ballads\, love songs and comic pieces\, reveal the experiences and emotions of daily life in the days before movies\, sound recordings and\, for some\, books. Songs from the lumber camps\, the decks of sailing ships\, the textile mills\, and the war between the sexes offer views of pre-industrial New England and a chance to hear living artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries.

SUMMARY:Raymond - Uprooted: Heartache and Hope in New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Uprooted is a 30-minute documentary based on interviews collected during the Humanities Council’s Fences & Neighbors initiative on immigration. It tells the story of five refugees who escaped from war-torn countries to resettle in New Hampshire. The film explores what it means to be a refugee and how it feels to make a new life in a strange place\, often without English language skills\, family\, a job\, or community contacts. The film leaves us pondering questions of belonging and citizenship. What does it mean to be an American? Once a refugee\, are you destined always to be a refugee? What are our responsibilities toward one another?  A New Hampshire Humanities presenter introduces the film and leads a post-film discussion. See bios and contact information in Presenter Directory for Whitney Howarth\, John Krueckeberg\, and Sara Withers.

SUMMARY:Greenfield - Family\, Memory\, Place: Writing Family Stories
DESCRIPTION:What family stories do you carry with you? What story do you tell over and over? What landscape do you cherish the most? One of the deepest human instincts is to tell our life stories\, to figure out who we are and what it means to be human. This interactive workshop led by Martha Andrews Donovan explores how the landscapes of our lives shape the stories that we tell. Participants explore the themes of family\, memory\, and place through sample narratives and a series of short writing exercises\, gaining a deeper awareness of how their stories can preserve personal\, generational\, and communal history.

SUMMARY:Hanover - Team Up\, Take Action: Partnering for Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:The Hitchcock Foundation Presents the Thirty-Fourth Annual Schumann Lecture\nTeam up\, Take Action: Partnering for Health Equity\nCamara P. Jones MD\, MPH\, PhD\nHealth equity means that everyone has the chance to be as healthy as possible. Health equity means reducing and eliminating disparities in health and its determinants that adversely affect excluded or marginalized groups. Health equity is inextricably linked with opportunity. It requires addressing obstacles to health such as poverty\, discrimination\, and their consequences\, including powerlessness and lack of access to good jobs with fair pay\, quality education and housing\, safe environments\, and healthcare. Health equity is fundamental to building a vibrant society because of its practical\, economic\, and civic implications and impact on individuals living a good life. \nDr. Jones is a family physician and epidemiologist whose work focuses on the impacts of racism on the health and well-being of the nation. She seeks to broaden the national health debate to include not only universal access to high-quality healthcare but also attention to the social determinants of health (including poverty) and the social determinants of equity (including racism). Dr. Jones is the immediate past president of the American Public Health Association \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary. \nThis public lecture is supported by an endowment to the Hitchcock Foundation from the late Helmut Wolfgang Schumann to provide a free lecture by a nationally renowned figure on topics related to healthful living. This year’s lecture will kick off the annual event for public health officials called “Team Up\, Take Action: Improving Population Health Together\,” co-sponsored by the New Hampshire Public Health Association\, the Vermont Public Health Association and Dartmouth-Hitchcock. Though the larger conference is a paid event\, the public may attend the Schumann Lecture from 4:00 PM-5:30 PM at no cost.

SUMMARY:Nashua - Holiday Stroll Luminaria
DESCRIPTION:Nashua’s 24th Annual Winter Holiday Stroll \nThe event takes place each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving; and although it started small\, it has steadily grown through the years. \nThe Stroll is recognized as the largest community event of the year in Southern New Hampshire. Each year\, over 30\,000 people from across New England visit downtown Nashua to enjoy this free and family-friendly holiday event. The evening kicks off at 5 p.m. with a candlelit procession up Main Street from City Hall to Railroad Square where the City’s official Christmas tree is lit. Much of the downtown is closed to traffic for the evening\, so even after the tree lighting Strollers can enjoy the live entertainment\, sample offerings from street vendors\, dine in downtown’s fine restaurants and Shop Small at our unique specialty shops and boutiques. \nHoliday Stroll Luminaria – Share A Light of Hope for the World from Our Welcoming City during the Holiday Stroll this Year \nThis year at the Holiday Stroll\, One Greater Nashua offers you the opportunity to shine a light of hope for the world by purchasing a “luminaria” in honor or memory of your loved ones who immigrated to Nashua\, or another place in the US\, and contributed to our prosperity. Decorating the streets with luminaria is a Spanish-inspired holiday tradition\, popular in many parts of the world. \nYou can purchase a luminaria – a battery-operated tribute candle placed in a white bag – for a $3.00 donation online\, or at the Stroll at 147 Main Street. Your candle\, with the name of the person you are honoring\, will be placed along the RiverWalk\, and it will be visible during the Holiday Stroll from the bridge on Main Street. Supplies will be available at the event for those who wish to decorate their own luminaria.\nProceeds from the tributes will be used to defray legal costs for our neighbors who are newly resettled in Nashua\, such as refugees and immigrants currently seeking permanent resident status and citizenship. \nAs members of the community\, we recognize that we are blessed. From our beginnings\, we have thrived because of our value of diversity\, ingenuity\, and collaboration. These shared values have forged among us a strong community bond as greater Nashuans. In the Gate City\, our prosperity has flourished through our openness and willingness to welcome newcomers who bring new ideas\, innovations\, and traditions\, which we embrace with mutual respect. \n

SUMMARY:Gorham - Songs of Emigration: Storytelling Through Traditional Irish Music
DESCRIPTION:Through traditional music Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki relays some of the adventures\, misadventures\, and emotions experienced by Irish emigrants. The focus is on songs about leaving Ireland\, sometimes focusing on the reasons for leaving (a man who is driven from his land by English persecution); sometimes revealing what happened upon arrival (an immigrant drafted into the Union army during the Civil War); and sometimes exploring the universal feeling of homesickness of a stranger in a strange land (a factory worker in London missing his home in County Clare). The presenter discusses the historical context of these songs\, interspersing their stories with tunes from Ireland that made their way into New England’s musical repertoire\, played on his fiddle or guitar.
