SUMMARY:Online - Finding Home: Portraits and Memories of Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:Join on October 8th for a presentation by Becky Field on her new book FINDING HOME: Portraits and Memories of Immigrants. Register in advance using this link: https://bit.ly/3mYsnhJ \nSee book description below: \nA new book has arrived that describes the journeys of immigrants to find a new home in New Hampshire. \nFINDING HOME: Portraits and Memories of Immigrants celebrates people from other countries who resettled in the Granite State. Since 2012 freelance photographer Becky Field has illustrated the diversity in this state through her photographs. Now in addition to her photos\, she interviewed 40 immigrant families about life in their country and their journeys to find a new home. The stories represent a mix of age\, gender\, New Hampshire communities\, and countries of origin. Some people came to escape violence; some came for love; some came for jobs or education. Some are teenagers with much life ahead of them; some are elders with long memories. The immigrants’ rich stories\, in their own words\, document the determination of people to find safety\, education\, work\, and freedom\, while Becky’s photos show the vitality of cultural diversity that contributes to our communities. \nThe book is $35 and can be purchased online (www.DifferentRootsNH.com)\, at local bookstores\, or directly from Becky (FieldWorkPhotos@gmail.com). All net profits from book sales go to non-profits that support immigrants and refugees. \nContact Becky if you are interested in a talk or exhibit from her work (603-568-3174).

SUMMARY:Online - Once Upon an American Dream
DESCRIPTION:The Heurich House Museum and the Bipartisan Policy Center are proud to present “Once Upon an American Dream\,” a three-part panel series exploring the stages of the immigrant experience in America: migration\, arrival\, and integration.\n \nOur third and final panel will take place as a virtual happy hour on Wednesday\, October 14 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. ET. The final event’s discussion will focus on how immigrants of the past and present integrate into our communities. Every immigrant’s journey to become an integral part of a new community is unique\, and we hope to explore these stories in our culminating panel. The discussion will focus on the following questions: What is the “Great American Success Story” and what does it mean to achieve the “American Dream”? How did immigrants integrate in the past and how do they do so today? What are some of the challenges to integration and how can they be overcome? \nThis panel series explores issues core to the Heurich House Museum’s mission. Christian Heurich’s life embodied a rags-to-riches story where an immigrant’s spirit of creative entrepreneurship yielded success and a family legacy. Yet\, the journey to achieve the American Dream comes in many forms and depends on many factors\, from gender and race\, to education and training\, opportunity and luck. Grab your favorite cocktail or “mocktail” and join the Heurich House and the Bipartisan Policy Center as we dive into these questions. \nAfter the event has concluded\, a recording will be available to view on both the Bipartisan Policy Center and the Heurich House Museum’s websites. \nThis virtual event is free\, but suggested donations are appreciated to support both organizations. \nFeatured Panelists: \n– Tyler Anbinder\, Professor of History\, George Washington University \n– Rachel Peric\, Executive Director\, Welcoming America \n– Jeff Alfaro\, Co-Owner & Founder\, JSquared Naturals

SUMMARY:Online - AFSC-NH Annual Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:Join the AFSC New Hampshire program for our annual fundraising celebration! \n \nThe American Friends Service Committee’s New Hampshire Program will host its annual gathering on Friday\, October 16\, 2020. Join us online for I Will Not Conform\, I Will Transform: Finding Joy in the Journey Towards Justice\, an evening of conversation and community with guest speaker Eroc Arroyo-Montano\, educator\, artist\, organizer and Director of Cultural Organizing at United for a Fair Economy. In dialogue with AFSC-NH’s new Program Coordinator\, Grace Kindeke and event attendees\, the evening will center on how we can bring healing\, imagination and joy to ground and evolve our movement work. \nThe AFSC’s New Hampshire Program works with individuals\, partner groups and coalitions to address the causes and effects of injustice in the state\, with a special emphasis on strengthening the safety net for low-income people; reversing income inequality; promoting the rights and well-being of workers\, tenants\, prisoners\, immigrants and refugees; ensuring access to safe\, decent and affordable housing; and abolishing the death penalty. To support movement building\, AFSC-NH engages in a variety of coordinated strategies to vitalize and nourish a large and growing movement of diverse people calling for social\, racial and economic justice. \nDate and time: \nFriday\, October 16\, 2020\n7:00 – 8:30 PM ET \nSpeakers include: \nEroc Arroyo-Montano\nDirector of Cultural Organizing\, United for a Fair Economy \nI am a proud father of three wonderful children\, an emcee\, circle keeper\, artist\, cultural organizer\, educator\, curandero and aspiring elder. I am a queer Boricua raised in Boston\, MA and a founding member of the radical\, award-winning hip-hop group Foundation Movement\, with whom I have been blessed to facilitate workshops and perform around the globe. This has included Tanzania (where we performed at Black August)\, Kenya\, Cuba (where we were honored to meet Assata Shakur)\, Palestine (where we performed at refugee camps)\, South Africa\, and Japan (where we participated in a 72-day peace walk from Hiroshima to Tokyo). All of these experiences have and continue to deeply transform me.   \nHealing justice\, arts and activism\, and popular education remain my passion\, purpose and priority in my community liberation movement work\, which I am able to develop\, practice and facilitate in my current role as Director of Cultural Organizing at the grassroots economic justice organization United for a Fair Economy. \nGrace Kindeke\nAFSC-NH Program Coordinator \nI am an artist\, a dancer\, and an activist earning a B.A. in Africana Studies and Sociology at UMASS Boston. I was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo\, immigrated to the U.S. as a toddler and grew up in Manchester\, NH. In 2013 I moved to Boston where I strengthened my voice\, performed from my ancestral roots and deepened my commitment to Black liberation\, systemic justice and generational healing. In 2018 gentrification encouraged my husband and I to move back to New Hampshire. I am excited to bring my intersecting experiences and perspectives as an African\, a woman and an immigrant to my work as AFSC-NH’s new Program Coordinator. \nModerated by: \nMaggie Fogarty\, AFSC-NH Program Director \nRegister here!
