DESCRIPTION:Jubilee is stories from landlords\, formerly homeless\, and tenants about housing in NH. \nWe’ll hear from Martin Toe about Granite State Organizing Project’s Housing Jubilee Campaign here in New Hampshire. \nDebt jubilee\, a practice going back 4\,000 years\, is an established way of resetting economies that are burdened by excessive personal and collective debt. As we emerge from the economic devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic\, we must consider this way of returning to individual and collective economic wholeness. \nA particularly critical form of debt is for housing. We were in a national crisis before the pandemic began\, with nearly half of all renters spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs and more than 25% paying more than 50% of their income. The Covid-19 crisis hit these households harder than most\, as many of them depended on jobs that were lost when the economy partially closed. Some short-term assistance in the form of extra unemployment and one-time relief checks delayed the inevitable impact on these families. Many states have allocated CARES Act money to help people pay their back rent incurred during the state of emergency\, but indications are that the NH one-time allocation of $2\,500 per household will not be enough to prevent a tide of evictions. \nYou will receive Zoom link and instructions with your RSVP. Given the profound significance Kwanzaa has for African Americans and indeed\, the world African community\, it is imperative that an authoritative source and site be made available to give an accurate and expansive account of its origins\, concepts\, values\, symbols and practice.” – Dr. Maulana Karenga\, www.officialkwanzaawebsite.org \nDr. Maulana Karenga\, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University\, Long Beach\, created Kwanzaa in 1966. After the Watts riots in Los Angeles\, Dr. Karenga searched for ways to bring African-Americans together as a community. He founded US\, a cultural organization\, and started to research African “first fruit” (harvest) celebrations. Karenga combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations\, such as those of the Ashanti and those of the Zulu\, to form the basis of Kwanzaa. \nThe name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili. DESCRIPTION:As the nation honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, tune into New Hampshire Public Radio for three specials exploring Dr. King’s remarkable life\, beliefs and legacy. \nSaturday\, January 16 \n10 p.m. – 11 p.m. (Best of Public Radio slot) \nFor the first special\, join NHPR for MLK: Three Landmark Speeches\, from our public media partners at PRX. In 2014\, producer Paul Ingles asked two leading King scholars to pick three of Dr. King’s most important speeches from the 1960s. Listeners will hear from the late Dr. Vincent Harding\, Professor of Religion and Social Transformation at the Illiff School of Theology in Denver\, Colorado. Harding was a personal friend and speechwriting colleague of Dr. King in the 1960s. In addition\, listeners will hear from Dr. Clayborne Carson\, who has been directing the King Papers Project since 1985. \nScholars chose the following speeches: \n\nKing’s last address\, the night before his assassination in 1968;\n the speech he made a year to the day before he was killed\, called “Beyond Vietnam”;\nDr. King’s remarks that he made at the conclusion of the Selma to Montgomery marches in March of 1965\, considered a turning point in the struggle for Voting Rights and equality for Black Americans.\n\n  \nMonday\, January 18 \n9 a.m. to 10 a.m. \nThe second special\, a live call-in episode of The Exchange\, will air on the MLK Day holiday. and re-air the same evening from 9 to 10 p.m. Host Laura Knoy will talk with Black activists and civil rights historians about recent events and what wisdom and lessons they take from Dr. King’s life and words. SUMMARY:Online - Peace & Justice Conversations: Why Work with Youth?
DESCRIPTION:Join NHPA with NH Youth Movement co-founder and former board member of NH Peace Action Griffin Sinclaire-Wingate as he talks about his work to harness the energy of young people to create political change. \nThroughout his 26 years Griffin has worked in a variety of movements and issue areas. In highschool he became involved in the anti-war movement through New Hampshire Peace Action. Upon starting college at the University of New Hampshire Griffin reignited the fossil fuel divestment campaign. As the 2016 presidential primary revved up Griffin shifted his work from targeting campus administration to targeting politicians. During this time he worked with a handful of organizations to push presidential candidates to take bold climate stances and get out the youth vote. The outcomes of the 2016 election solidified the growing idea that the progressive movement needed to get serious about wielding political power and winning elections. As his time at UNH came to a close Griffin became the co-director of 350 New Hampshire and coordinated their Offshore Wind Campaign and Pipeline Resistance Campaign (both were victorious). Still focused on the need to build progressive political power Griffin started laying the groundwork for a youth lead movement that would leverage the political power of young people to elect lawmakers who will fight for a livable future with good jobs\, health\, and education for all. In the fall of 2017 Griffin launched New Hampshire Youth Movement with a group of his college organizing friends. He currently serves as a Co-Director of New Hampshire Youth Movement. Outside of organizing Griffin makes pottery at a local studio in Rochester and enjoys writing music.
