SUMMARY:Online - Tea Talk Series: Claiming Our Place: Blacks in “White Spaces”
DESCRIPTION:America has a long and troubled history of segregated public spaces. When Amy Cooper called the police on Christian Cooper (no relation) in Central Park last year\, the incident underscored a familiar script that continues America’s legacy of enslavement. Some whites perceive African Americans who venture into public spaces as dangerous and disruptive intruders. All it took was a white woman to spout a racist dog whistle and the park\, a public space\, was made unsafe for a Black man. \nThe 2021 Tea Talk Series\, as a way to rethink our assumptions about race and place\, explores how African Americans navigate various “white spaces”\, spaces where Blacks and People of Color are marginalized\, typically absent\, and unexpected. Through shared stories and dialogue this series will present ideas and offer opportunities for understanding and reconciliation. \nThe winter Tea Talk series\, presented by the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire (BHTNH) and sponsored in part by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities\, is a series of participatory lectures related to New Hampshire’s Black history and African American culture. \nThese events are free and open to the public. \nAll talks are Sunday afternoons from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. \nRegistration for each talk is required. \nBlack Heritage Trail of NH: 2021 Elinor Williams Hooker Tea Talks\nClaiming Our Place: Blacks in “White Spaces”\nSundays February 7 – March 14\, 2PM-4PM \n\nFeb. 7 – Racism\, Land & the American Farming Landscape\nFeb. 14 – Writing While Black: The Afrofuturistic Writer\nFeb. 21 – Race & Care of the Soul\nFeb. 28 – It Happened in NH: Black History in the Granite State\nMar. 7 -The Power of Place: Martha’s Vineyard and the Growth of the Black Elite\nMar. 14 – On Shaky Ground: Students of Color in Predominantly White Institutions\n\n

SUMMARY:Online - The Black Church: This is Our Story\, This is Our Song
DESCRIPTION:Produced in partnership with the New Hampshire Humanities\, New Hampshire PBS presents an online screening and discussion of the new PBS documentary\, THE BLACK CHURCH: THIS IS OUR STORY\, THIS IS OUR SONG on Monday\, February 8th at 6pm. \nThis moving two-part series from executive producer\, host and writer Henry Louis Gates\, Jr.\, traces the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America\, all the way down to its bedrock role as the site of African American survival and grace\, organizing and resilience\, thriving and testifying\, autonomy and freedom\, solidarity and speaking truth to power. The documentary reveals how Black people have worshipped and\, through their spiritual journeys\, improvised ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World\, while translating them into a form of Christianity that was not only truly their own\, but a redemptive force for a nation whose original sin was found in their ancestors’ enslavement across the Middle Passage. \nAfter the 30 minute screening\, join for a discussion with New Hampshire Humanities Public Programs Director Dr. Tricia Peone\, in conversation with Dr. Vaughn Booker\, Assistant Professor of Religion and African and African American Studies at Dartmouth College. \nThis event will be on OVEE here – https://ovee.itvs.org/screenings/1x5fm \nRun a test to ensure OVEE works properly on your computer. \nTHE BLACK CHURCH: THIS IS OUR STORY\, THIS IS OUR SONG airs on NHPBS: \n\nTuesday\, February 16 @ 9pm on NHPBS | Episode One\nWednesday\, February 17 @ 9 pm on NHPBS | Episode Two\n\nwith numerous replays on NHPBS and online at nhpbs.org

SUMMARY:Online - NH People's Budget Community Conversation: Public Health & State Budget
DESCRIPTION:New Hampshire people deserve a state budget that invests in our communities’ health\, education\, recovery\, opportunity\, and vitality. Not one that gives tax cuts to the wealthiest at the expense of essential services and programs. Stand with us to demand that we the people deserve a state budget that serves ALL Granite Staters!\nRecently\, the NH House passed the budget on a party-line vote\, approving a proposal that would eliminate hundreds of positions in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and underfund public health services by about $100 million.\nThese proposed cuts and shortfalls to DHHS are designed to pit our community services against each other. Join this event to learn more about what it would take to break down the silos in our public health system\, move beyond scarcity and meet the real needs of real people.\n\nLearn more about the NH People’s Budget demands here: https://drive.google.com/…/1-E2PqQ73V8BFKW1Go0LmUG…/view\nThe fight for the budget is far from over. Join us to learn ways you can take action to demand that our elected officials build a budget that works for ALL of us.\n\nRegistration Link:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUvfuihqjgoHtDKginJh8y25KMQ_lmPAnv7?fbclid=IwAR1qA534K09f9awOeZQHCI01w-VMgHgLzEHfrCi2PqkyYETaNEFCZyqi31w

SUMMARY:Online - Anti-Racist Action: A Continuous Transformation
DESCRIPTION:A series to help build your understanding of what it means to be anti-racist and how to take intentional action for sustainable change.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn partnership with New Hampshire for Anti-Racist Education (NHARE)\, “Anti-Racist Action: A Continuous Transformation” will help build your understanding of what it means to be anti-racist and how to take intentional action for sustainable change in your community. Active listening and internal reflection are the springboard for which anti-racism work begins. The work in this series is simply the first step on a long road towards change. Facilitated by Adaeze Okorie and Grace Landry\, the Co-Founders of New Hampshire for Anti-Racist Education\, these workshops are driven by the insights they both learned through their personal and collaborative work. From internal reflection to community action\, this interactive workshop series steps through how we can begin to take anti-racist actions for continuous transformation. In anti-racist work we ask ourselves\, not just what are we doing\, but who are we becoming? \nRead more and Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/anti-racist-action-a-continuous-transformation-tickets-150533934049?fbclid=IwAR0npVoAXJ5yRLvDYk0fuild6RSlGxwjVkSyfLoVHZvemYqcS1R67LpmIEg

SUMMARY:Frederick Douglass Statewide Community Readings
DESCRIPTION:On July 5\, 1852\, Frederick Douglass\, an abolitionist and heroic orator for liberty\, delivered one of his most famous speeches in which he asked\, “What to the slave is your Fourth of July?” In addressing an Independence Day observance in Rochester\, New York\, his speech was a blistering indictment of an American idealism that ignored and accepted the inhuman treatment of enslaved African Americans as part of the country’s identity and economy. Ironically\, even though Douglass’ words spoke directly to this moment in history\, they still ring with an unsettling power today. \nFor the past several years\, on July 3rd\, the BHTNH has collaborated with community leaders around the Granite State to bring people together to read Douglass’ historic protest speech and to reflect on its meaning. \nWhile reading Frederick Douglass’ work is a powerful experience for many\, it is only one piece of the long-overdue conversations that our communities need to have. We hope that these readings will be a starting point for these difficult dialogues and that they will provide an opportunity for us to engage in deeper conversations that will lead to actions to help build more inclusive and just communities today. \nDetails for the 2021 Community Readings and how to get involved coming soon!
