SUMMARY:Concord - Community Forum in Response to Scotus Muslim Ban Decision
DESCRIPTION:The Supreme Court just allowed the Muslim ban to continue. \nIn a 5-4 ruling\, justices sided with this cornerstone of Trump’s discriminatory immigration policy. The latest version of the ban limits entry to the United States from citizens of five Muslim-majority countries in addition to a miniscule number of North Koreans and Venezuelans. \nLet’s be clear: This is a loss. But this isn’t the end of the fight – we’re committed to taking down this discriminatory ban on every front – in Congress\, in the courts\, and on the streets. \nWe are working in coalition with other groups to provide a space for community and solidarity in the wake of this decision. \nSpeakers include:\n– Robert Azzi who does a lot of “Ask a Muslim Anything” across NH\n– Asma Elhuni a Libyan Muslim woman and organizer with United Valley Interfaith Project\n– Devon Chaffee Executive Director for the ACLU of New Hampshire\n– and you!

SUMMARY:Manchester - Families Belong Together
DESCRIPTION:Families Belong Together – NH Protest\n\nAttend our #FamiliesBelongTogether rally in Manchester\, NH to protest Donald Trump’s decision to separate kids from their families at the border and keep kids in detention centers across the country. \nJune 30 is a national day of action – bring your friends\, family\, and snarky signs. It’s time to use our outside voices. Donald Trump and his administration are cruelly separating children from their families. But we won’t allow it to continue. \nOn June 30\, we’re rallying in Washington\, D.C.\, and around the country to tell Donald Trump and his administration to stop separating kids from their parents! Trump and his administration have been systematically criminalizing immigration and immigrants\, from revoking Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to ramping up intimidating ICE tactics. \nJoin us on June 30 to send a clear message to Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress: Families Belong Together! \nBy participating in this event\, you agree\n(i) not to engage in any act of violence or violation of any applicable law\,\n(ii) to obey the orders of authorized event marshals and law enforcement authorities\, and\n(iii) that event organizers and sponsors will not be responsible for any injury or damage to your person or property resulting from or occurring in the course of your participating in the event\, and you agree to release and forever hold harmless event organizers and sponsors\, and their respective officers\, directors\, employees\, and agents from liability for any such injury or damage. \n\n\nhttps://act.moveon.org/event/families-belong-together_attend1/19921/?source=taf

SUMMARY:Dover: #FamiliesBelongTogether Rally and City Council Action
DESCRIPTION:It is SO important for communities to come together to raise up our voices against injustice when we encounter it. Injustice is the Trump Administration’s policy around separating families at the border. Injustice is CBP questioning people waiting to board a private bus on Memorial Day weekend. Injustice is CBP setting up checkpoints on highways nearly a hundred miles away from the border. \nJoin us for a rally in front of Dover City Hall to say NO to separating families and YES to keeping families together. From there we’ll all go to the Dover City Council meeting to urge them to take action as well.

SUMMARY:Manchester - World Refugee Day 2018
DESCRIPTION:Join us to observe the World Refugee Day 2018 in Manchester. Refugees have opened businesses\, contributed significantly\, and become productive members of communities that welcomed them. Many become American citizens and see their children graduate from U.S. schools. We would be honored for you to attend our event to celebrate and share time with refugees resettled in our community\, including many who are now U.S. citizens. Refugees are a testament to the United States’ long\, proud history as a sanctuary for those who seek lives free from violence and oppression. Join us celebrating this great tradition!

SUMMARY:Manchester - My Voice Matters
DESCRIPTION:My voice matters because… \nIt’s my town.\nIt’s my job.\nIt’s my family’s health.\nIt’s my child’s education. \nWhen family members act as advocates\, their children do better. Educators\, physicians\, employers\, and elected leaders want the best for you and your family. They count on you to let them know what would be helpful. \n“Deciding to be an active advocate for your child can seem hard\,” said Julie Day\, Strengthening Families Director at New Hampshire Children’s Trust\, “but we know just how much parent voices matter and how easy advocating can be.” \nParticipants will learn why their voice matters and how to advocate for children: at doctor’s appointments\, at parent teacher conferences\, at your job\, at town meetings\, at school board meetings\, by voting\, by contacting your state representative and more. Open to families\, professionals\, and all community members. FREE DINNER!

SUMMARY:Manchester - TEDxAmoskeagMillyard: "Immigration"
DESCRIPTION:The goal of the TEDxAmoskeagMillyard salon events is to spread ideas and build community in our corner of Southern New Hampshire. We will be creating space (in a local place) and time (about 90 minutes) to watch TED talks together and have informal facilitated discussion\, in person\, about the ideas we encounter in the selected talks. \nThe theme of the second salon is immigration. Not since World War II have so many people been forcibly displaced by war and persecution. What is our responsibility to help refugees and immigrants thrive? Can we connect as humans\, with greater empathy\, to immigrants and the personal challenges and experiences they face when starting over? What policies and practices might optimize the well-being of immigrants and our communities during this displacement? What might we do to help lay the ground work so that displaced persons might be able to return home? \nLearn More at https://tedxamoskeagmillyard.com/salon/

SUMMARY:Hanover - The Use of Hiphop Rhetorics to Combat the Criminalization of Black\, Brown\, and Red Youth
DESCRIPTION:Hiphop culture grew out of the South Bronx in the 1970s and 1980s when young people of color combined their genius with available materials to produce the four original elements of hiphop: deejaying\, graffiti art\, breakdancing\, and rapping. Since then\, a confluence of young Blacks\, American Indians\, and Latino/as have used hiphop to reimagine everyday practices\, discarded technologies\, and public spaces. Marcos Del Hierro will explain and contextualize the role non-Western ways of knowing play in developing communicative practices unique to hiphop\, as well as how those practices combat systematic oppression. By looking at hiphop culture’s non-Western roots\, Del Hierro will provide insight into how hiphoppers produced sustainable models for recycling knowledge and technology to produce art\, criticism\, and pleasure\, allowing them to respond to social discourses that represent young people of color as inferior and deviant. Modes of expression like mixtapes\, rap songs\, ciphers\, subway art\, and hiphop fashion not only set trends\, but also speak about issues like urban blight\, political marginalization\, racism\, and colonization. This interactive presentation will invite the audience to participate in a “cipher\,” or hiphop circle\, as a way to experience one example of how knowledge is made in hiphop communities. Young and old audiences are invited to engage with one of the most influential and funky cultural forces of the last forty years.

SUMMARY:Bedford - TEDxAmoskeagMillyardSalon: "Story"
DESCRIPTION:The goal of the TEDxAmoskeagMillyard salon events is to spread ideas and build community in our corner of Southern New Hampshire. We will be creating space (in a local place) and time (about 90 minutes) to watch TED talks together and have informal facilitated discussion\, in person\, about the ideas we encounter in the selected talks. \nThe theme of the first salon is “Story.” From the time we are children\, we know the world through stories. Who decides which stories get told? And how they get told? How do we know we have the right story? Or that it is complete? Join us for this discussion about one of the building blocks of society—story. \nLearn More at https://tedxamoskeagmillyard.com/salon/

SUMMARY:Francestown - Uprooted: Heartache and Hope in New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Uprooted: Heartache and Hope in New Hampshire\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUprooted is a 30-minute documentary based on interviews collected during the Humanities Council’s Fences & Neighbors initiative on immigration. It tells the story of five refugees who escaped from war-torn countries to resettle in New Hampshire. The film explores what it means to be a refugee and how it feels to make a new life in a strange place\, often without English language skills\, family\, a job\, or community contacts. The film leaves us pondering questions of belonging and citizenship. What does it mean to be an American? Once a refugee\, are you destined always to be a refugee? What are our responsibilities toward one another? \nA New Hampshire Humanities presenter introduces the film and leads a post-film discussion. See bios and contact information in Presenter Directory for Whitney Howarth\, John Krueckeberg and Sara Withers.

SUMMARY:Durham - Waking Up White: Author Read & Community Dinner
DESCRIPTION:How could a community with good intentions be home to discrimination and racism? How does a state like New Hampshire that is mostly white fit into the national narrative of racial strife\, now and in our past? What do we know about race? Through April 2018\, residents of Madbury\, Lee\, and Durham will have the opportunity to investigate race and tolerance in a series of book discussions\, lectures\, art exhibits\, and activities for all ages. The grassroots coalition came together last May as a way to help community members embrace difficult conversations about racism. \nFunded in part by a New Hampshire Humanities Community Project Grant\, the community read features a memoir called Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race by Debby Irving. \nThe series culminates with a special event featuring an author talk and community dinner on April 16th at Oyster River High School. Kristin Forselius\, chair of the Oyster River Community Read\, shared\, “This collaboration of businesses\, towns\, libraries\, schools\, community groups\, and houses of worship makes a strong statement about who we are and who we want to be\, which is a community that values all people.” For more information and a complete list of events\, visit www.orcread.org.
