One of the deepest human instincts is to tell our life stories\, to figure out who we are and what it means to be human. This interactive workshop led by Martha Andrews Donovan explores how the landscapes of our lives shape the stories that we tell. Participants explore the themes of family\, memory\, and place through sample narratives and a series of short writing exercises\, gaining a deeper awareness of how their stories can preserve personal\, generational\, and communal history.

DESCRIPTION:Uprooted is a 30-minute documentary based on interviews collected during the Humanities Council’s Fences & Neighbors initiative on immigration. It tells the story of five refugees who escaped from war-torn countries to resettle in New Hampshire. The film explores what it means to be a refugee and how it feels to make a new life in a strange place\, often without English language skills\, family\, a job\, or community contacts. The film leaves us pondering questions of belonging and citizenship. What does it mean to be an American? Once a refugee\, are you destined always to be a refugee? What are our responsibilities toward one another?  A New Hampshire Humanities presenter introduces the film and leads a post-film discussion. DESCRIPTION:Drawing heavily on the repertoire of traditional singer Lena Bourne Fish (1873-1945) of Jaffrey and Temple\, New Hampshire\, Jeff Warner offers the songs and stories that\, in the words of Carl Sandburg\, tell us “where we came from and what brought us along.” These ballads\, love songs and comic pieces\, reveal the experiences and emotions of daily life in the days before movies\, sound recordings and\, for some\, books. Songs from the lumber camps\, the decks of sailing ships\, the textile mills\, and the war between the sexes offer views of pre-industrial New England and a chance to hear living artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries.

She edited Nieman Reports at Harvard University’s Nieman Foundation for Journalism for 13 years. To pursue her writing in social and political justice issues\, she was awarded academic fellowships from Harvard University\, Radcliffe College\, and Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. In 2010 Ludtke received the Yankee Quill Award for lifetime achievement as a journalist. \nMs. Ludtke made history while covering baseball as a reporter for Sports Illustrated. After Commissioner Bowie Kuhn denied her access to interview ballplayers in team locker rooms\, Time Inc.\, the company that owned Sports Illustrated\, filed a federal lawsuit (Ludtke v. Kuhn). The lawsuit claimed that Major League Baseball’s media policy of providing unequal access to women reporters violated her rights under the Fourteenth Amendment by depriving her of the liberty to fully pursue a career in sports reporting. In September 1978\, a federal judge agreed\, establishing equal access to locker rooms for women reporters. Her papers related to this groundbreaking suit are archived at Harvard’s Schlesinger Library\, and her oral history of this period in time is preserved as part of the Washington Press Club Foundation’s Women in Journalism oral history project.

DESCRIPTION:2017 Black New England Conference\nThe Science and Engineering of Race: Living Through the Archives \nThe Carsey School is a proud co-sponsor of the 2017 Black New England Conference. This conference will discuss how modern medical and social sciences have made some extraordinary advances through the exploitation of Black bodies while simultaneously allowing myths of racial inferiority to continue as justification for centuries of enslavement and political disenfranchisement. \nFrom the Tuskegee syphilis experiment to the unethical use of Henrietta Lacks’ cells to engineer a polio vaccine\, to the ongoing forced sterilization of Black women in clinics and prisons\, the story of American scientific advancement carries with it a shadow story of ethical corruption\, pain\, and silencing. He received the Hungarian Civilian Cross\, the highest recognition to non-residents awarded by the Hungarian president. During his work as Honorary Consul\, Mr. Garai was awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2005 and an award pro auxilio cirium Hungarum in 2007 to recognize his efforts for the protection of Hungarian citizens. In 2013\, he was selected as honorary commercial attaché for Hungary. In 2014\, Mr. Garai was awarded the AmCham Hungary’s Dr. Iván Völgyes Award\, which recognizes individuals for encouraging and facilitating Hungarian-American business partnerships and cultural and academic alliances.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Culture Shock!” at Jupiter Hall and explore the dissonance\, diversity and cultural integration of Manchester’s lively and cosmopolitan community. Manchester’s Claudia Rippee will be showing her collection of poignant graffiti photographs. These crisp and riveting images will be juxtaposed against Patrick McCay’s vivid\, textural paintings. Added to the mix will be the haunting faces created by photographer Tim Donovan. These remarkable images are borrowed from his Phantasmagoric portfolio. Rounding out the show will be sculptural elements created by installation artist Erin Sweeney. Erin’s work will be drawn from her mixed media installation “How To Build A Community” along with her storyteller sculptures. When combined\, this work will challenge and inform preconceptions about the social\, cultural and ethnic diversity within The Queen City. \nComplimenting the art on the walls will be a steady but unexpected flow of dance and music. On the 12th and 13th\, Wisty Andres\, a classically trained contemporary dancer and Theo Marty\, a dancer/drummer trained in several West African traditions will improvise together. The results will unwind in an entirely original\, ephemeral and personal dance. Deo Mwano and Movement From Above will bring their inimitable blend of hip hop and jazz fusion to the event on the 14th Boston based Lorraine Chapman will return again with another rendition The Suit Lady character who will be a running persona in all Art Front events. She’s a surprise guest who reveals her own experience of the art and evening.

Azzi welcomes questions on Islam\, on being Muslim\, on issues related to terrorism and on the geopolitics of the Middle East as he has experienced and understands them. \nAbout Robert Azzi:\nRobert Azzi is a photojournalist\, columnist and public speaker who lives in Exeter\, NH. An Arab American Muslim\, he writes on issues of Identity\, Conflict\, and Islam\, particularly as they apply in the Middle East and the Global South. Born in New Hampshire\, he’s lived in Beirut\, Cairo\, Athens\, Jeddah and New York. Although he returned to the Granite State in the late 1980s\, he continues to travel to work with Middle East clients and friends on a regular basis. \nAzzi has been a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University\, a member of the Leadership Council of the Harvard Divinity School\, an adviser to Tufts University’s Fletcher School committee on Islam and South-West Asia and recently became a board member of ACLU-NH. As a photojournalist his work appeared frequently in such publications as Life\, Time\, Newsweek and National Geographic\, Fortune and other domestic and international publications.
