SUMMARY:Webinar - Immigrant Workforce Integration Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:Scale Up and Train Your Partners Across Sectors in Immigrant Workforce Integration Best Practices: Upwardly Global’s Jobversity Practitioner Learning Pathway (PLP) Training Program\n\n\n\nIn 2019\, Upwardly Global and Welcome Toledo-Lucas County (TLC) successfully piloted UpGlo’s Jobversity platform to train more than 30 local workforce development and service provider staff on how to better assist newcomers with professional backgrounds. Welcome TLC partnered with Lucas County Department of Planning and Development\, the County’s workforce and economic development department\, and OhioMeansJobs-Lucas County\, the County’s American Job Center or CareerOneStop and utilized Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) (federal workforce development funds)\, as well as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) federal funds. Previous to the Jobversity training\, Lucas County workforce and job center staff had limited to no experience with the needs and issues of immigrant and refugee workers\, including topics such as credential evaluation of foreign degrees or how to help job seekers navigate the cultural differences of a U.S. job search. The staff now has a much greater understanding of how to effectively support immigrant and refugee clients into professional careers and in-demand middle-skill jobs and is currently serving this community at a greater rate than before. \nThis webinar will focus on how the Jobversity PLP training was utilized by Welcome TLC and its partners to deepen understanding of immigrant workforce integration best practices among workforce development and local service provider staff. The webinar will include lessons learned and practical tips for how the training can be used in your community to scale up and train your partners across sectors. A special discount is currently available to the Jobversity PLP training for Welcoming America members across the network. \nUpwardly Global (UpGlo) is a national nonprofit\, the first and longest-serving U.S. organization focused exclusively on long-term economic integration for immigrants and refugees. To date\, UpGlo has helped 6\,500+ immigrants and refugees in the United States. \n\nTime \n\nMar 25\, 2020 01:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)

SUMMARY:Manchester - Conversation about Race (CANCELED)
DESCRIPTION:Join Granite State Organizing Project (GSOP) for a structured conversation about racial identities and how they shape our lives and relationships. \n\n\nWe live in a moment of keen awareness of the power of racial identity\, but don’t often get to talk about it in a way that brings more light than heat. And many of us have questions we don’t even know how to ask. In this two-hour structured conversation\, GSOP’s multi-racial team shares basic concepts about racism and leads groups through discussions based on where people in the room are starting. \nOur assumption is that racism cannot be erased until we look directly at the existence and impact of “whiteness”. We recognize that this can bring up discomfort for some\, and we welcome everyone who wants to be part of this conversation. \nGSOP is the largest grassroots community organization in New Hampshire. We are comprised of religious congregations\, community groups\, labor organizations and individuals in New Hampshire united in our concern for economic and social justice.

SUMMARY:Concord - Crossroads Film Series: "Children of War" (POSTPONED)
DESCRIPTION:This event will be rescheduled for a future date. Stay tuned for details. \n  \nCrossroads Film Series: Breaking the Chains of Trafficking\n“Children of War” \nJoin the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire for a documentary film showing of Children of War\, which puts a spotlight on former child soldiers over a three year period from war-torn Northern Uganda as they try to heal mentally\, spiritually\, and emotionally from their trauma in a rehabilitation center. The film showing will be followed by a moderated discussion featuring Conrad Mandsager\, founder and CEO of the New Hampshire-based nonprofit ChildVoice which works to invest in the future of war-affected children and youth through education\, counseling\, professional development\, mentoring\, and more. We hope to see you there! \nTuesday\, April 7th\, 7 PM\nRed River Theatres\n11 S Main St #L1\nConcord\, NH 03301 \nTickets are $13 for the general public\,\n$10 for WACNH members. \nWatch the Trailer:\nhttps://youtu.be/mniAS78vjM8 \nAbout “Children of War”:\nFilmed inside the war zone of northern Uganda over a period of three years\, Children of War is a unique and incandescent documentary which captures the story of a group of former child soldiers as they undergo a process of emotional and spiritual healing while in a rehabilitation center. \nHaving been abducted from their homes and schools and forced to become fighters by the Lords Resistance Army — a quasi-religious militia led by self-proclaimed prophet and war criminal Joseph Kony — the children struggle to confront and break through years of brutal abuse\, extreme religious ideology\, and participation in war crimes with the help of a heroic team of trauma counselors. \nAs these fearless allies guide the children forward into new lives\, Children of War illuminates a powerful and cathartic story of forgiveness and hope in the aftermath of war. \nAbout ChildVoice:\nSince 2006\, ChildVoice has worked to restore the voices of children silenced by war. ChildVoice reaches out to adolescent girls and their children who are affected by years of war in northern Uganda\, South Sudan\, Nigeria\, and other at-risk countries\, providing center- and community-based programs. ChildVoice intercedes on behalf of these highly vulnerable child mothers and other victims of sexual violence and exploitation\, offering the counseling\, education\, and vocational training they need to rebuild their lives and regain their dignity. \nChildVoice empowers war-affected girls to lead productive\, economically advantaged\, and independent lives while contributing toward a better\, sustainable future for their children and communities. \nAbout Conrad Mandsager:\nThroughout his career\, Conrad Mandsager has provided program design\, development\, and evaluation services to numerous organizations seeking aggressive growth in new and existing ventures that serve at-risk populations. After completing his studies at Wartburg College and Iowa State University\, he held senior management positions with Prison Fellowship Ministries\, JAF Ministries\, and Dare Mighty Things. Mandsager is currently the CEO of ChildVoice. \nConrad grew up in Africa and has returned numerous times to work with disadvantaged populations in Kenya\, Ghana\, South Sudan\, Uganda\, and Zambia. \nIn 2006\, Conrad founded ChildVoice in response to the millions of children whose destinies are being destroyed by war. ChildVoice’s programs recognize that someone must speak for the voiceless and devastated children who often are unable even to whisper the horror of becoming young victims of brutality and inhumanity. \nThis project was made possible with support from:\nThe Lantos Foundation

SUMMARY:Online - The NH People's Bailout: A Covid-19 Virtual Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:As of April 28\, 60 NH residents have died and over 2\,000 NH residents have tested positive for COVID-19. Because the rate of testing in NH has remained low\, NH ranks 29th in the fifty states in terms of number of tests given\, public health officials estimate that a much larger number of Granite Staters have been infected. \nThe pain of the virus is not distributed evenly. Instead\, people of color in NH are disproportionately likely to be infected with COVID-19. \nDue to the challenges New Hampshire is facing\, we’re hosting a unique town hall on May 7th featuring community leaders and representatives. We’ll be discussing components of stimulus packages\, share stories from our communities\, and give current elected officials the opportunity to speak to constituencies. \nLet’s pull together\, as we’ve done in times past\, to demand our government provide money and care to those who are hardest hit\, not to the wealthy few. \nWe believe that we can create a NH where:\n1. Health is the top priority\, for all people\, with no exceptions.\n2. Provide economic relief directly to the people\n3. Rescue workers and communities\, not corporate executives.\n4. Make a down payment on a regenerative economy\, while preventing future crises.\n5. Protect our democratic process while protecting each other.\n6. Prioritize Black\, indigenous\, undocumented\, and low-income communities who are hurt first and worst.\n7. Invest in the global cooperation we need to address the global pandemic. \nWe are calling on our governor\, legislature\, and leading administrative officials to follow the lead of people’s organizations and direct our collective resources as a state to those who most need our support now\, and in the ensuing months. \nOur response to this crisis must fight inequality\, not double down on the unjust status quo. \nZoom meeting access provided upon registration.\nRSVP: https://secure.everyaction.com/nXdCK1DuwEmkTJ482kuQmg2

What is the current situation in Iran\, and how are they navigating both a devastating health crisis and the effects of simultaneous international economic sanctions? What realistic policies should the U.S. pursue post-November? \nOn Tuesday\, June 16th at 5pm\, join us in hearing from intelligence expert Dr. Paul Pillar\, formerly of the CIA and currently with The Iran Project. Dr. Pillar will be discussing these\, and similar\, issues\, as well as a possible path forward. His talk will be followed by a Q&A from the audience. SUMMARY:Online - Juneteenth 2020 - Cooking with Selina: A Soul Food Cooking Show
DESCRIPTION:On a small scale\, food ties us to memories of our childhood and our families. On a larger scale\, food connects us to an important part of our culture and the expression of our cultural identity. \nWith a focus on the history of Soul Food and Soul Music\, this year’s Juneteenth Celebration offers a series of engaging\, informative\, and entertaining programs that examine the connection between food and historical events in the Black community. \nAfrican American cuisine\, Soul Food\, is one of the most popular and recognizable types of cooking in the United States. It was birthed in the deep South from a history of enslavement\, relentless racism\, and ingenuity. Forced to live off scraps from their enslavers\, enslaved Africans blended African and American cultural traditions\, techniques\, and certain ingredients to create incredibly delicious and culturally unique dishes.\nJoin Selina Choate in her home kitchen for this live demonstration to see how she puts her own twist on an authentic Soul Food meal. \nRecipes available online: http://blackheritagetrailnh.org/2020-juneteenth-celebration-food-for-the-body-food-for-the-soul/

SUMMARY:Online - Juneteenth 2020 - Diet of Our Ancestors: What History & Science Reveals
DESCRIPTION:During the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, enslaved Africans were given meager food rations that were low in quality and nutritional value. With these rations\, enslaved people preserved African food traditions and adapted traditional recipes with the resources available. Over time\, these recipes and techniques have become the Soul Food dishes we are familiar with today. This food genre\, now associated with comfort and decadence\, was born out of struggle and survival. \nThis panel of scholars\, featuring special guest Adrian Miller\, will explore how history\, science\, and food connect major events in African American history and define Black culinary traditions. The panel will also share what dental metrics and plaque analysis can tell us about New Hampshire’s early African Americans. \nPresenters: Adrian Miller\, Amy Michael \nModerator: Shari Robinson

SUMMARY:Online - COVID-19: Disproportionate Impact on Black Communities
DESCRIPTION:Register \nThis webinar is part of County Health Rankings & Roadmaps’ special topic series\, Health Equity and Social Solidarity in the Time of Pandemic: Strategies for COVID-19 Response and Recovery. \nCOVID-19: Disproportionate Impact on Black Communities \nWe know that before this pandemic arrived\, not everyone had the same opportunity to live a long and healthy life.
