SUMMARY:Nashua - Uprooted: Heartache and Hope in New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Uprooted is a 30-minute documentary based on interviews collected during the Humanities Council’s Fences & Neighbors initiative on immigration. It tells the story of five refugees who escaped from war-torn countries to resettle in New Hampshire. The film explores what it means to be a refugee and how it feels to make a new life in a strange place\, often without English language skills\, family\, a job\, or community contacts. The film leaves us pondering questions of belonging and citizenship. What does it mean to be an American? Once a refugee\, are you destined always to be a refugee? What are our responsibilities toward one another?  A New Hampshire Humanities presenter introduces the film and leads a post-film discussion. See bios and contact information in Presenter Directory for Whitney Howarth\, John Krueckeberg\, and Sara Withers.

SUMMARY:Dover - Family Wellness Series: Building Strong Communities
DESCRIPTION:Building Strong Communities\n\nPresented by Jeff Frigon of the Browne Center \nEmpathy is directly linked to bullying; the more empathy we have\, the more likely we are to be kind to one another and not bully (or be bullied). By building healthy\, empathetic communities and understanding the connection between empathy\, fear\, vulnerability\, anonymity\, and bullying\, we can act in a preventative rather than a reactive way. This workshop will explore what the research shows to be effective and why using an interactive\, multimedia approach.

SUMMARY:Hanover - Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration - Event Series\, Jan. 11 - Feb. 9
DESCRIPTION:BORDERS\nCELEBRATION 2018\n\n\nWe have arrived once again to that time of the school year when we pause to honor Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. The pause is a critical time for us to examine the progress made toward justice since our gathering a year ago. This year has been a challenge for the nation and for the world. Decades of progress in the areas of social justice and equality appear to be threatened by careless actions and oppressive polices. For many\, the faith in the pursuit of happiness for all is being threatened by isolationism and divisive measures. If we ever needed to hear the voices of our ancestors– all oppressed groups who gave their lives for the freedoms we deserve– we need to hear their voices deep in our center of consciousness now and take action. \nAs we spend time together as a community\, let us recommit ourselves to honoring and living the legacy of Rev. King. Let us not forget his fight for the poor\, the hungry\, the unemployed\, the imprisoned\, those fighting in wars that they did not cause and those who were willing to die as free people than to continue to live as political slaves. SUMMARY:Manchester - Building Our Beloved Community
DESCRIPTION:“The end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the beloved community.”\n– Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, December 3\, 1956 \nJoin City Year New Hampshire in Building Our Beloved Community this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day\, January 15\, 2018. Among Dr. King’s most compelling visions is that of a Beloved Community – a community in which people of different backgrounds recognize that we are all interconnected and that our individual well-being is inextricably linked to the well-being of others. It is with this idea in mind that we invite you to a day of remembrance and celebration of our shared humanity. \nMonday\, January 15\, 2018\, 9 am – 12 pm \nYWCA New Hampshire\, 72 Concord St\, Manchester\, NH 03101 \nPlease bring a donation for the NH Food Bank. Most needed items include canned chicken\, canned tuna\, peanut butter\, jelly\, mac n cheese\, canned soup\, pasta\, noodle mixes\, and rice mixes. \nREGISTER HERE \nDetailed Schedule: \n9 am Registration and light breakfast \n9:30 am Kick-off Rally: Building Our Beloved Community \nBe inspired by reflections on the Beloved Community\, the legacy of Dr. King\, and our shared humanity. \n10:00 am – 12 pm Diversity\, Service and Volunteer Fair \nExplore aspects of our diversity through interactive\, family-friendly stations; engage in hands-on service projects to benefit the Manchester community; participate in a community art project sponsored by The Currier; and\, learn from local non-profit organizations about ways to continue your involvement beyond the day. \n11 am – 12 pm Workshops \nFor those who want to attend a more in-depth training or presentation\, a limited number of workshop options are available. See list below and specify your interest in the registration form. Attendance is geared towards teens and up and space is limited at all sessions. \nIf you have any questions please reach out to Mark Fickle at (603)-218-5086 or mfickle@cityyear.org \nWorkshop Descriptions:\nSpace is limited. All sessions held at the YWCA. \nActive Bystander Training\, presented by Granite State Organizing Project\nIdeal for ages 15 and up; 20 participants \nHave you ever been a witness to a situation where you left feeling like you could have done something to help\, but were unsure how? This training allows participants to recognize when they are bystanders and learn how they can interrupt harm doing and generate positive actions by others. We emphasize that active bystandership does not mean aggression against the harm doer. It means taking responsible action to help people in need\, instead of remaining passive and becoming complicit. \nMicroaggressions: What They Are & Why We Should be Aware\, presented by Rachael Gottlieb\, City Year New Hampshire\nIdeal for ages 14 and up; 25 participants \nDoes “No\, where are you really from?”\, “Your English is really good”\, “You’re really pretty for a…” sound familiar? This training brings awareness to the commonplace\, verbal and behavioral acts that are insulting towards people of color\, whether intentional or not\, and gives tips on what to do about them as both players and bystanders. Participants will be able to apply what they learn in this training to their everyday life as they see microaggressions happen and take the initiative to stop them. \nUnpacking Whiteness\, presented by New Hampshire Listens\nIdeal for ages 14 and up; 30 of participants \nHow do I unintentionally benefit from racism? What does it mean to be “white” today? Participants in this workshop will engage in constructive\, reflective conversations focused on examining and understanding racial bias\, systemic racism\, and unpacking whiteness. Racism is not just about individual acts of meanness. It also includes those invisible systems that confer advantages on those people considered white while disadvantaging people of color. These systems are subtle and difficult to unravel and understand. Our ultimate goal is for our community to be a place where everyone can reach their full potential. All are welcome. \nGender Identity & The Gender Spectrum\, presented by Cadence Pentheny\, City Year New Hampshire\nIdeal for ages 15 and up; 20 participants \nWhat is the distinction between feminine and masculine? How did we come to a binary system of male or female\, and what is the gender spectrum? This workshop serves as an introduction to how complex gender is\, the struggles individuals with nonconforming gender identities face within a binary system and why that’s not good for any gender. All welcome. \nThe Use of Hiphop Rhetoric to Combat the Criminalization of Black\, Brown\, and Red Youth\, presented by Marcos Del Hierro\, New Hampshire Humanities to Go\nIdeal for ages 10 and up; 25 participants \nThis interactive presentation will invite the audience to participate in a “cipher\,” or hiphop circle\, as a way to experience one example of how knowledge is made in hiphop communities. Young and old audiences are invited to engage in a family friendly environment with one of the most influential and funky cultural forces of the last forty years. Modes of expression like mixtapes\, rap songs\, ciphers\, subway art\, and hiphop fashion not only set trends\, but also address issues like urban blight\, political marginalization\, racism\, and colonization.

We will accompany immigrants as they report to ICE and organize the community vigils for support.\n\nSupport & Advocacy: \n\nIf an immigrant is detained by ICE: We will offer support to families as they navigate life without their detained loved one and work to get them released. This could include rides\, food\, childcare\, making appointments\, housing\, financial assistance\, etc.; going with them to court hearings; and engaging elected officials & organizing vigils/public actions around the case.\n\nSanctuary: \n\nIf a person fears deportation: Some congregations may decide to offer sanctuary to a person who fears deportation and separation from their family.  Sanctuary is a public act of civil disobedience.\n\nRapid Response: \n\nIf there is an ICE raid: When we get a call that a raid is happening\, we will call the teams to the site of the raid to hold a prayer vigil\, document what happens\, and be a presence for the family.

SUMMARY:Peterborough - Turkish and Rumeli Music: Contemporary Encounters with Tradition Dolunay and Çeşni Trio
DESCRIPTION:Turkish and Rumeli Music: Contemporary Encounters with Tradition Dolunay and Çeşni Trio\n7:00 pm \nThis concert double-header features two unique interpreters of the music of the lands once ruled by the Ottomans. The Brooklyn\, NY based trio Dolunay (Turkish for “full moon”) draws upon the songs from the Turkish people living across Rumeli\, the former region of the Ottoman Balkans. Dolunay’s intimate sound\, sparse in loudness and textured with the dissonance of eastern blues\, gives way to a sound at once earthy and celestial\, the size of which defies that of the small makeup of the band. The ensemble is Jenny Luna (voice\, percussion)\, Adam Good (ud\, tambura) and Eylem Basaldi (violin). www.dolunaynyc.com \nThe music of Boston based Çeşni Trio is grounded in the flavors (çeşniler) of Turkish makam music while remaining personal and contemporary. The ensemble guides listeners from dove-tailing contemplative melodies to odd-metered tunes that throw caution to the wind. Çeşni Trio is Tev Stevig (tanbur\, ud\, fretless 7-string guitar\, alternatelli)\, Michael K. Harrist (yayli tanbur\, ney\, double bass) and Fabio Pirozzolo (darbuka\, bendir\, cajon\, tombak\, riq). https://www.tevstevig.com/cesni-trio

SUMMARY:Concord - The Art of Listening
DESCRIPTION:“I don’t need fixing or advice…I just want you to listen to me.”\n\n\nEver heard those words? Listening well has the capacity to heal. Believe it. Listening is a gift that can help someone relieve their burdens\, discover deep truth\, open their heart\, and resolve life dilemmas. And truly effective listening requires very little effort.\n\n\n\n\n\nBut most of us have been trained to analyze\, problem-solve\, and compulsively try to resolve another’s issues. Although we mean well\, we often end up sabotaging our conversations and relationships in an exhausting effort to “fix” the situation. (We’re not so much listening\, as we are simply waiting to speak.)\n\n\n\n\n\nAnd it leaves everyone feeling…well\, kind of blahhh.\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is a much better\, more compassionate way to listen\, and you can learn the simple secrets. Join us this coming weekend for a fun\, experiential introduction to conscious listening — as our free guest. Not only will this experience help you become a more supportive listener\, you’ll also learn how to gently guide others to effectively support you when you desire to be heard!

DESCRIPTION:Rethinking Resistance: Ona Judge\, the Washingtons’ Runaway Slave and the Meaning of Escape\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy do we remember some stories about the past while passively “forgetting” or actively erasing others?
