SUMMARY:Online - Juneteenth 2020 - Cooking with Selina: A Soul Food Cooking Show
DESCRIPTION:On a small scale\, food ties us to memories of our childhood and our families. On a larger scale\, food connects us to an important part of our culture and the expression of our cultural identity. \nWith a focus on the history of Soul Food and Soul Music\, this year’s Juneteenth Celebration offers a series of engaging\, informative\, and entertaining programs that examine the connection between food and historical events in the Black community. \nAfrican American cuisine\, Soul Food\, is one of the most popular and recognizable types of cooking in the United States. It was birthed in the deep South from a history of enslavement\, relentless racism\, and ingenuity. Forced to live off scraps from their enslavers\, enslaved Africans blended African and American cultural traditions\, techniques\, and certain ingredients to create incredibly delicious and culturally unique dishes.\nJoin Selina Choate in her home kitchen for this live demonstration to see how she puts her own twist on an authentic Soul Food meal. \nRecipes available online: http://blackheritagetrailnh.org/2020-juneteenth-celebration-food-for-the-body-food-for-the-soul/

SUMMARY:Online - Juneteenth 2020 - Diet of Our Ancestors: What History & Science Reveals
DESCRIPTION:During the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, enslaved Africans were given meager food rations that were low in quality and nutritional value. With these rations\, enslaved people preserved African food traditions and adapted traditional recipes with the resources available. Over time\, these recipes and techniques have become the Soul Food dishes we are familiar with today. This food genre\, now associated with comfort and decadence\, was born out of struggle and survival. \nThis panel of scholars\, featuring special guest Adrian Miller\, will explore how history\, science\, and food connect major events in African American history and define Black culinary traditions. The panel will also share what dental metrics and plaque analysis can tell us about New Hampshire’s early African Americans. \nPresenters: Adrian Miller\, Amy Michael \nModerator: Shari Robinson

SUMMARY:Webinar - COVID-19: Disproportionate Impact on Navajo Nation and Tribal Communities
DESCRIPTION:Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is part of County Health Rankings & Roadmaps’ special topic series\, Health Equity and Social Solidarity in the Time of Pandemic: Strategies for COVID-19 Response and Recovery. \nThe Navajo Nation has long experienced barriers to health and opportunity. As the COVID-19 pandemic has crossed the country\, the Navajo tribe has been disproportionately impacted by the virus\, facing some of the highest rates in the United States. \nChronic underfunding for health and infrastructure for tribal nations coupled with the historical trauma that has come from centuries of forced relocation and other federal policies are now compounding the impacts of COVID-19. Prevention efforts including social distancing and increased hand-washing are particularly challenging to maintain across the Navajo Nation\, due in large part to the 30-40% of households without access to running water or electricity\, widespread food insecurity\, and large number of multi-generational households. \nDuring this webinar we will be joined by Dr. Patricia Nez Henderson\, Vice President of the Black Hills Center for American Indian Health and a member of the Diné (Navajo) tribe\, to explore:\n•    Historical causes of the health and infrastructure inequities in the Navajo Nation\n•    Strategies to incorporate tribal values and customs with western knowledge and medicine to address health crises\n•    Policies and strategies that can reduce barriers to health and opportunity in tribal communities \nThere will be a one-hour interactive virtual discussion at 4pm ET\, immediately following the webinar. We encourage you to participate in an engaging dialogue with peers across the country to share your experiences navigating the pandemic and your thoughts on how the strategies shared during the webinar may work in your community. Mark your calendars and plan to stay as long as you’re able!

SUMMARY:Webinar - Engaging the Community to Inform the Way Forward
DESCRIPTION:Communities are being challenged in so many ways from COVID-19 from public health and economic crises to chasms in community inclusivity calling for police reform. Engaging residents and community stakeholders around community values and priorities can play a critical role in informing decision makers searching for a solid path forward. \nHow can local community leaders feel confident that the voices they are hearing from best represent their entire population including those underrepresented\, hard to reach\, and historically not connected? Engagement needs to extend beyond those voices typically heard to help community leaders align future recovery and growth with verified community interests and values. \nJoin Polco / National Research Center\, Inc. (NRC) civic engagement and survey research experts to – \n– hear and discuss effective ways to enhance engagement throughout all community segments.\n– learn about recent efforts to help communities better understand COVID19 impacts.\n– broaden the conversation around community policing needs.\n– learn how to easily engage regionally to identify collaborative opportunities. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Manchester - Faith March for Black Lives
DESCRIPTION:The Greater Manchester Clergy Association joins with NAACP and community groups in FAITH MARCH FOR BLACK LIVES. \nThe Greater Manchester Clergy Association (GMCA) is drawn from clergy/laity around the City of Manchester. As leaders of communities of faith and hope\, we believe that it is imperative to bring a religious perspective to the national debate on race and justice. We mourn with African Americans\, and we join with them in demanding change. We are inheritors of prophetic traditions that teach us not only “to let justice well up like water and righteousness as an unfailing stream” [Amos 5:24]\, but that we are ALL our Brothers’ and Sisters’ Keepers\, and we cannot stand idle while our neighbors bleed. We believe that each and every human being is created in the Divine Image\, and all are deserving of respect. We cannot allow different treatment under law to continue for people of color. We share a moral call to pray and to act to bring about a world where each and every person can sit under his or her vine and fig-tree\, in security\, in comfort and in peace. \nTo transmit our concern for the spiritual wellbeing of our community and nation\, we have joined with the NAACP\, the MLK Coalition\, and the Granite State Organizing Project (GSOP) to co-sponsor a march on Saturday\, July 25\, 2020\, two months after the tragic murder of George Floyd\, so that we may pray and act together. Please join us at 6 pm\, in front of the Courthouse\, 35 Amherst Street\, to begin our circuit for justice. We will march: \n· from the Courthouse to City Hall (6:30); \n· to the Corner of Elm and Bridge (7 pm); \n· to Pulaski Park (7:30); \n· back to the Courthouse (8 pm) \nIf you have mobility issues\, please feel free to go to a particular stop\, you need not walk the entire route. \nJoin us to pray with our feet\, to learn from each other\, and to share our hopes and prayers. \nJoin us to remember the lives lost\, and heed the challenge that it is up to us to speak out and stand up for a nation where indeed all men and women\, regardless of race or religion\, skin color or sexual orientation\, enjoy liberty and justice. \nJoin us to do justice\, to love goodness\, and to walk humbly with God. \nAs a gesture of caring\, all participants will be requested to wear a mask or face covering! \nFor More Information: Rev. Barb Brawley\, GMCA President 603-663-2300\nRev. Sarah Rockwell\, GSOP President 603-965-6499 or\nJames McKim\, Manchester NAACP President 603-540-3988
