SUMMARY:Concord - Crossroads Film Series: "Brave Girl Rising"
DESCRIPTION:Crossroads Film Series: Breaking the Chains of Trafficking\n“Brave Girl Rising” \nJoin the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire for a documentary film showing of Brave Girl Rising. The film showing will be followed by a moderated discussion featuring Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett\, President of the Lantos Foundation for Human Rights and Justice\, a distinguished and respected voice on key human rights concerns ranging from advancing rule of law globally and fighting for Internet freedom in closed societies\, to combatting the persistent and growing threat of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial. We hope to see you there! \nWednesday\, March 11th\, 7 PM\nRed River Theatres\n11 S Main St #L1\nConcord\, NH 03301 \nTickets are $13 for the general public\,\n$10 for WACNH members. \nWatch the Trailer:\nhttps://youtu.be/0EME3jObeJo \nAbout “Brave Girl Rising”: \nBrave Girl Rising was made in collaboration with The International Rescue Committee (IRC)\, whose Women’s Protection and Empowerment programs support Nasro\, the 17-year-old girl featured in the film\, in Dadaab refugee camp\, and with support from the project’s Founding Partner\, Citi. To coincide with the film’s release\, Girl Rising (GR)\, IRC\, and Citi are teaming up with HP and Amplifier to launch a major campaign that will include screening toolkits\, curricula\, take action guides and a street art initiative. \nWarsan Shire\, the UK’s former young poet laureate and social media phenom behind Beyoncé’s Lemonade\, incorporates elements of magic realism and moving poetry in the screenplay. Tessa Thompson\, who is the voice of the film\, is not only Hollywood’s hottest new star (Creed 2\, Westworld\, Thor)\, but as one of the founding members of Time’s Up\, she’s a powerful advocate for women in her own right. \n“At a moment when 68.5 million people are displaced worldwide\, around half of whom are women\, this film brings much-needed awareness to the challenges faced by women and girls in crisis”\, said Nicole Behnam\, Senior Director for Violence Prevention and Response at the IRC. “Campaigns like this ensure the most vulnerable women are part of the global conversation\, and show the importance of prioritizing their safety\, education and wellbeing. The IRC is proud to support and empower girls like Nasro around the world\, so that they can recover from violence and take control of their lives.” \nNasro arrived at Dadaab when she was only 7 years old. Shire wrote the screenplay based on hours of conversation with Nasro—and the story weaves together true events in Nasro’s life and her dreams with the award-winning poet’s own experience as a refugee. \n“We want to get people talking about the reality for refugee girls all over the globe\, the barriers they face in securing basic human rights and the truly transformative power of education for girls living as refugees”\, said Christina Lowery\, CEO of GR. “We believe films like ours can turn bystanders into activists and we have seen first-hand the results of people who become engaged in the issue and are inspired to act.” \nThe IRC is a global leader in providing services and resources to adolescent girls in crisis\, to help them regain control over their lives and futures. Through psychosocial support\, skills-building activities\, mentorship\, and other interventions\, the IRC engages girls\, their parents\, caregivers\, and community leaders to combat harmful gender norms and practices\, including gender-based violence. \nGR launched its global campaign in 2012 with the goal of changing how people value and invest in girls and girls’ potential. Since then\, GR has created media-driven campaigns and grassroots programming with on-the-ground partners in India\, Nigeria\, Pakistan\, Thailand\, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is expanding into Kenya and Guatemala in 2019. Through creative storytelling in the form of films\, PSAs\, social media campaigns\, radio programming\, mobile games\, and by teaming up with local organizations\, GR is reaching girls\, boys\, parents\, teachers\, community and government leaders\, sparking conversation and locally-led action in support of girls’ education and girls’ rights. The results include girls re-enrolling in school\, parents deciding against early marriage\, brothers standing up for their sisters\, girls learning their rights and teachers creating gender-equal classrooms. \nAbout Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett: \nDr. Katrina Lantos Swett serves as President of the Lantos Foundation for Human Rights and Justice\, established in 2008 to continue the legacy of her father\, the late Congressman Tom Lantos\, who served as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and was the only Holocaust survivor ever elected to the US Congress. Congressman Lantos was the founder of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus and was widely acknowledged as one of our nation’s most eloquent and forceful leaders on behalf of human rights and justice. \nUnder her leadership\, The Lantos Foundation has rapidly become a distinguished and respected voice on key human rights concerns ranging from advancing rule of law globally and fighting for Internet freedom in closed societies to combatting the persistent and growing threat of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial. \nDr. Lantos Swett is the former Chair and Vice-Chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and teaches Human Rights and American Foreign Policy at Tufts University. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Board of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) and the Budapest based Tom Lantos Institute. Dr. Lantos Swett also serves on the US State Department’s Commission on Unalienable Rights\, the Advisory Board of UN Watch\, the annual Anne Frank Award and Lecture\, the Warren B. Rudman Center for Justice\, Leadership\, and Public Policy\, and the Advisory Council of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. Dr. Lantos Swett is the co-editor of The Noble Banner of Human Rights\, a book of essays on human rights published by Bill Nijhoff Press in 2018. \nLantos Swett earned a Political Science degree from Yale University at the age of 18\, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California\, Hastings College of the Law\, and a PhD in History from The University of Southern Denmark. \nThis project was made possible with support from:\nThe Lantos Foundation

SUMMARY:Webinar - Immigrant Workforce Integration Best Practices
DESCRIPTION:Scale Up and Train Your Partners Across Sectors in Immigrant Workforce Integration Best Practices: Upwardly Global’s Jobversity Practitioner Learning Pathway (PLP) Training Program\n\n\n\nIn 2019\, Upwardly Global and Welcome Toledo-Lucas County (TLC) successfully piloted UpGlo’s Jobversity platform to train more than 30 local workforce development and service provider staff on how to better assist newcomers with professional backgrounds. Welcome TLC partnered with Lucas County Department of Planning and Development\, the County’s workforce and economic development department\, and OhioMeansJobs-Lucas County\, the County’s American Job Center or CareerOneStop and utilized Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) (federal workforce development funds)\, as well as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) federal funds. Previous to the Jobversity training\, Lucas County workforce and job center staff had limited to no experience with the needs and issues of immigrant and refugee workers\, including topics such as credential evaluation of foreign degrees or how to help job seekers navigate the cultural differences of a U.S. job search. The staff now has a much greater understanding of how to effectively support immigrant and refugee clients into professional careers and in-demand middle-skill jobs and is currently serving this community at a greater rate than before. \nThis webinar will focus on how the Jobversity PLP training was utilized by Welcome TLC and its partners to deepen understanding of immigrant workforce integration best practices among workforce development and local service provider staff. The webinar will include lessons learned and practical tips for how the training can be used in your community to scale up and train your partners across sectors. A special discount is currently available to the Jobversity PLP training for Welcoming America members across the network. \nUpwardly Global (UpGlo) is a national nonprofit\, the first and longest-serving U.S. organization focused exclusively on long-term economic integration for immigrants and refugees. To date\, UpGlo has helped 6\,500+ immigrants and refugees in the United States. \n\nTime \n\nMar 25\, 2020 01:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada)

SUMMARY:Manchester - Conversation about Race (CANCELED)
DESCRIPTION:Join Granite State Organizing Project (GSOP) for a structured conversation about racial identities and how they shape our lives and relationships. \n\n\nWe live in a moment of keen awareness of the power of racial identity\, but don’t often get to talk about it in a way that brings more light than heat. And many of us have questions we don’t even know how to ask. In this two-hour structured conversation\, GSOP’s multi-racial team shares basic concepts about racism and leads groups through discussions based on where people in the room are starting. \nOur assumption is that racism cannot be erased until we look directly at the existence and impact of “whiteness”. We recognize that this can bring up discomfort for some\, and we welcome everyone who wants to be part of this conversation. \nGSOP is the largest grassroots community organization in New Hampshire. We are comprised of religious congregations\, community groups\, labor organizations and individuals in New Hampshire united in our concern for economic and social justice.

SUMMARY:Concord - Crossroads Film Series: "Children of War" (POSTPONED)
DESCRIPTION:This event will be rescheduled for a future date. Stay tuned for details. \n  \nCrossroads Film Series: Breaking the Chains of Trafficking\n“Children of War” \nJoin the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire for a documentary film showing of Children of War\, which puts a spotlight on former child soldiers over a three year period from war-torn Northern Uganda as they try to heal mentally\, spiritually\, and emotionally from their trauma in a rehabilitation center. The film showing will be followed by a moderated discussion featuring Conrad Mandsager\, founder and CEO of the New Hampshire-based nonprofit ChildVoice which works to invest in the future of war-affected children and youth through education\, counseling\, professional development\, mentoring\, and more. We hope to see you there! \nTuesday\, April 7th\, 7 PM\nRed River Theatres\n11 S Main St #L1\nConcord\, NH 03301 \nTickets are $13 for the general public\,\n$10 for WACNH members. \nWatch the Trailer:\nhttps://youtu.be/mniAS78vjM8 \nAbout “Children of War”:\nFilmed inside the war zone of northern Uganda over a period of three years\, Children of War is a unique and incandescent documentary which captures the story of a group of former child soldiers as they undergo a process of emotional and spiritual healing while in a rehabilitation center. \nHaving been abducted from their homes and schools and forced to become fighters by the Lords Resistance Army — a quasi-religious militia led by self-proclaimed prophet and war criminal Joseph Kony — the children struggle to confront and break through years of brutal abuse\, extreme religious ideology\, and participation in war crimes with the help of a heroic team of trauma counselors. \nAs these fearless allies guide the children forward into new lives\, Children of War illuminates a powerful and cathartic story of forgiveness and hope in the aftermath of war. \nAbout ChildVoice:\nSince 2006\, ChildVoice has worked to restore the voices of children silenced by war. ChildVoice reaches out to adolescent girls and their children who are affected by years of war in northern Uganda\, South Sudan\, Nigeria\, and other at-risk countries\, providing center- and community-based programs. ChildVoice intercedes on behalf of these highly vulnerable child mothers and other victims of sexual violence and exploitation\, offering the counseling\, education\, and vocational training they need to rebuild their lives and regain their dignity. \nChildVoice empowers war-affected girls to lead productive\, economically advantaged\, and independent lives while contributing toward a better\, sustainable future for their children and communities. \nAbout Conrad Mandsager:\nThroughout his career\, Conrad Mandsager has provided program design\, development\, and evaluation services to numerous organizations seeking aggressive growth in new and existing ventures that serve at-risk populations. After completing his studies at Wartburg College and Iowa State University\, he held senior management positions with Prison Fellowship Ministries\, JAF Ministries\, and Dare Mighty Things. Mandsager is currently the CEO of ChildVoice. \nConrad grew up in Africa and has returned numerous times to work with disadvantaged populations in Kenya\, Ghana\, South Sudan\, Uganda\, and Zambia. \nIn 2006\, Conrad founded ChildVoice in response to the millions of children whose destinies are being destroyed by war. ChildVoice’s programs recognize that someone must speak for the voiceless and devastated children who often are unable even to whisper the horror of becoming young victims of brutality and inhumanity. \nThis project was made possible with support from:\nThe Lantos Foundation
