Karenga combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations\, such as those of the Ashanti and those of the Zulu\, to form the basis of Kwanzaa. \nThe name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili.
