On Saturday\, February 17th at 2pm Basile shares the power of traditional Italian music with the Monadnock region by performing Italian love songs for the Valentine’s Day season. Each song is contextualized in English prior to singing in Italian. \nTickets are $15/person and only $10/person for members of the Historical Society of Cheshire County . For tickets call 603.352.1895. \nThis event is made possible through a partnership with the Guglielmo Marconi Societa Italiana Di Mutuo Soccorso

SUMMARY:Madbury - All Eyes Are Upon Us: Racial Struggles in the Northeast\, from Jackie Robinson to Deval Patrick
DESCRIPTION:All Eyes Are Upon Us: Racial Struggles in the Northeast\, from Jackie Robinson to Deval Patrick \nFrom Brooklyn to Boston\, from World War II to the present\, Jason Sokol traces the modern history of race and politics in the Northeast. Why did white fans come out to support Jackie Robinson as he broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947 even as Brooklyn’s blacks were shunted into segregated neighborhoods? How was African-American politician Ed Brooke of Massachusetts\, who won a Senate seat in 1966\, undone by the resistance to desegregation busing in Boston? Is the Northeast’s history a microcosm of America as a whole: outwardly democratic\, but inwardly conflicted over race? THIS EVENT IS PART OF THE OYSTER RIVER COMMUNITY READ. THEY WILL BE READING\, WAKING UP WHITE. THERE WILL BE VARIOUS EVENTS FROM MID-JANUARY THROUGH MID-APRIL.

SUMMARY:Plaistow - Songs of Emigration: Storytelling Through Traditional Irish Music
DESCRIPTION:Songs of Emigration: Storytelling Through Traditional Irish Music \nThrough traditional music Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki relays some of the adventures\, misadventures\, and emotions experienced by Irish emigrants. The focus is on songs about leaving Ireland\, sometimes focusing on the reasons for leaving (a man who is driven from his land by English persecution); sometimes revealing what happened upon arrival (an immigrant drafted into the Union army during the Civil War); and sometimes exploring the universal feeling of homesickness of a stranger in a strange land (a factory worker in London missing his home in County Clare). The presenter discusses the historical context of these songs\, interspersing their stories with tunes from Ireland that made their way into New England’s musical repertoire\, played on his fiddle or guitar. PRIOR TO THE PROGRAM\, THE TRIANGLE GUILD WILL BE HOSTING A BRUNCH AT 11:00AM THAT WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
