DESCRIPTION:Join ACLU and American Friends Service Committee for a rally at the Exeter Bandstand on October 6th from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM! We need to ensure that our local communities are safe and welcoming places for all people\, including immigrants. That means making sure that local police departments are not questioning people about their immigration statuses\, detaining them\, and turning them over to ICE. \nPlease bring signs\, family\, and friends. We will also plan on having extra signs there.\n—————– \nOn August 10th\, Bashar Awawdeh helped the Exeter PD with its investigation of an alleged simple assault by providing translation services that enabled the Department to questions and ultimately arrest a suspect. The Department returned the favor by then unlawfully detaining\, seizing\, and arresting Awawdeh on the suspicion that he was in the United States without documentation. Exeter Police then handed Awawdeh over to ICE where he was detained away from his family for 26 days until he was released on bond with the help of our lawyers. This is not okay. \nUnfortunately\, many local police departments in NH -including Exeter\, Salem\, and Danbury routinely- take on the work of immigration enforcement. Not only are these practices unlawful\, they are deeply harmful to public safety and contradict our “Live Free or Die” principles. As a community we must raise our voices to demand that local police not only end these practices but that they implement policies that make ALL of their communities members safe and free.

Luke Wood of UCLA. The on-line program includes 9 lectures and panel discussions along with a supplementary reading list. Each topic aligns with research on supporting academic success for black men and boys. On campus\, in person group discussion will follow the video each week. Lectures may be viewed on campus beginning at 4 p.m.\, or participants may also view the lectures on-line prior joining the face-to-face discussion on campus. SUMMARY:North Woodstock - Uprooted: Heartache and Hope in New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Uprooted is a 30-minute documentary based on interviews collected during New Hampshire Humanities’ Fences & Neighbors initiative on immigration. It tells the story of five refugees who escaped from war-torn countries to resettle in New Hampshire. The film explores what it means to be a refugee and how it feels to make a new life in a strange place\, often without English language skills\, family\, a job\, or community contacts. The film leaves us pondering questions of belonging and citizenship. What does it mean to be an American? Once a refugee\, are you destined always to be a refugee? What are our responsibilities toward one another?  A New Hampshire Humanities presenter introduces the film and leads a post-film discussion. (For safety and storm closure information\, check here)  \nAbout Anne Rasmussen \nSince 1994 Rasmussen has directed the William and Mary Middle Eastern Music Ensemble\, a forum for the study and performance of music and with musicians from the Middle East and Arab world.  Over the years\, the ensemble has hosted more than sixty guest artists\, has recorded two compact disc recordings\, and has made international concert tours in Morocco and Oman. \nRasmussen also serves on the faculty of Asian and Middle East Studies at William and Mary and has been chair of the Middle East Studies Faculty and co- director the Asian Studies Initiative.  She also chaired the Department of Music from 2011-2014. In Spring 2007 Rasmussen was professor for the William and Mary in Washington Program. \nRasmussen’s broad research interests include music of the Arab world\, the Middle East and the Islamicate world\, music and multiculturalism in the United States\, music patronage and politics\, issues of orientalism\, nationalism\, and gender in music\, and fieldwork\, music performance\, and the ethnographic method. She teaches a family of courses in ethnomusicology and music research at William and Mary and has mentored a number of William and Mary student toward graduate study in ethnomusicology and careers in music and academia. \nPresented in partnership with UNH Manchester’s homeland security\, history\, humanities and politics and society programs\, the World Affairs Council of America\, and the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center
