Providing Psychosocial Support to New Americans in Your Community

Pre-Registration Required

A free training for Wraparound Coordinators, Supervisors of Wraparound projects, Wraparound Family and Youth Peer Supporters, and Wraparound Coaches, as well as school staff, community-based staff, and behavioral health providers who work with New American families.

The Refugee Trauma & Resilience Center at Boston Children’s Hospital will offer a daylong training on refugee mental health with a focus on children, adolescents, and families. Audience participation and engagement will be strongly encouraged. Content will be tailored to the New Hampshire, New American community context.

This training will provide an overview of the New American experience prior to, during, and after migration. Attendees will be introduced to the core stressor model as a tool for assessing and conceptualizing the multi-faceted needs of New American children and families upon resettlement in the United States. Culturally-specific customs, beliefs, norms, and practices will be discussed, with a focus on East African cultures. Common barriers to healthcare for these New American families will be explored in addition to strategies to engaging these families in services. Attendees will also learn about the effects of trauma on New American children and families with particular attention paid to the impact of sequential traumatization and intergenerational trauma on development. Finally, the training will focus on best practices for providing culturally-responsive, trauma-informed family-based services to New Americans, which will include considerations and techniques for: (1) conducting culturally-sensitive interviews; (2) working with interpreters; (3) culturally-responsive resource mapping and care coordination; and (5) attending to the acculturation gap between parents and children as part of your service plan.
