Celebrating the arrival of spring, Holi (also called Holaka or Phagwa) is a festival practiced by Hindus in countries such as India, Nepal, and Bangladesh in March. The public is invited to attend this family-friendly cultural celebration at the Historical Society of Cheshire County, 246 Main Street, in Keene on Saturday, March 3th at 12pm. Co-hosted by the Keene India Association, members of the regions Indian community will share the epic story behind the festival, involving an evil King, his determined son, a malicious aunt Holika, and the Hindu god Vishnu. Families are invited to shake off their winter blues and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring by heading outside to respectfully throw colored powder at each other. The Society recommends that participants wear old clothes, dress warmly, and bring a towel to brush off powders at the end of the event.
