Kwanzaa (African American Holiday)
December 25, 2018 - January 1, 2019
Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration honoring African heritage in African-American and Pan-African cultures. It is observed from December 26 to January 1. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University. Kwanzaa is based on the year-end harvest festivals that have taken place throughout Africa for thousands of years. The name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits.”
