Free36TH Annual MLK Day Community Celebration in Manchester January 15TH
MANCHESTER – The 2018 Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration will take place at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral Community Center on Monday, January 15, with Rev. Mariama White-Hammond as guest speaker. The Celebration begins with a social hour, catered by local restaurants, at 2 PM. The program, featuring music, awards, and our guest speaker will begin at 3 PM and end at about 5 PM.
The theme of the 2018 Celebration is “Where We Stand.” Rev. Mariama White-Hammond serves as the Minister for Ecological Justice at Bethel AME Church in Boston and as a fellow with the Green Justice Coalition, a partnership of environmental justice groups. From 2001-2014 she was the Executive Director of Project HIP-HOP (Highways Into the Past – History, Organizing and Power). In April 2016, she was ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and in May 2017 she graduated from Boston University School of Theology with a Masters of Divinity.
Rev. Mariama is very committed to engaging the faith community on social justice issues, and particularly Black churches on ecological justice. She speaks throughout the country and serves on a number of boards and committees including the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, Union Capital Boston and the Moral Movement Massachusetts. In 2017, she was the MC for both the Boston Women’s March and the Boston People’s Climate Mobilization. Rev. Mariama has received numerous awards including the Barr Fellowship, the Celtics Heroes Among Us, and the Boston NAACP Image Award.
The winners of the 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Award and the 2018 Vanessa Johnson Award will be announced soon.
The annual Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration is sponsored by the Martin Luther King Coalition, which is made up of local organizations dedicated to carrying on Dr. King’s work.
Everyone is welcome to attend the Celebration; donations will be accepted to cover the Coalition’s expenses.
