Program 6: Immigration and Popular Culture looks at the ways the media and popular culture have historically taught newcomers how to “be American,” and how the rich contributions of different immigrant groups have transformed American culture and art. The discussion explores such themes as:
· Generational changes in culture and identity
· How different ethnicities are represented, and how that has changed over time
· Cultural debates over identity
· Definition from inside vs. definition from outside
· Use of familiar icons in new cultural settings
· Cross-cultural meeting vs. cultural appropriation
